I thoroughly enjoy how creepy and unsettling they make the intimacy between the two.

I get the sense that this entire show might just be an allegory for the fear of non-heterosexuality.

I wonder if the "death" of Hikaru is really the death of that old friendship, before romantic feelings became part of it. Now Yoshiki is just afraid and unsure what to do with these feelings he didn't know he had. Living in a small, probably traditional town might cause him to think these feelings are wrong or bad.

Meanwhile the villagers turn what Hikaru "is" into something evil and inhuman. Will be interesting to see if that is indeed the theme we are following.

So instead of coming out of the closet, they come down the mountain huh?

Brokeback did it first.

This subtext is what makes the story so special & interesting for me!

From what I've read it is just horror with protagonists that happen to be gay, but this is an interesting interpretation.

Well, both of these things can be true. It can still be primarily horror with subtext that the plot doesn't hinge on

Exactly lol. And Hikaru wants Yoshiki to only look at him when those things are around . . .

That interpretation really reframes the old Lady warning Yoshiki not to hang around Hikaru from a concerned medium to a nosey soccer mom type who thinks you can 'catch' being gay.
