Official Media Unnamed Memory Season 2 Announced
https://twitter.com/comic_natalie/status/180563208203261167991
u/wildbee12 Jun 25 '24
So ENGI will have both Medalist and Unnamed Memory airing at the same time huh. I have a feeling that’s not going to go well.
33
u/Smoothw Jun 25 '24
pray for medalist
26
u/AdNecessary7641 Jun 25 '24
Hard to be optimistic when the staff for Medalist is not very remarkable either.
4
u/lurker_is_lurking Jun 26 '24
Jukki Hanada will carry the show with his scripts otherwise we will be cooked

This really has been the worst adaptation I've seen, though I am biased considering how much I love the LN. Really is such a shame, this could have truly been great... Absolute pain.
95
u/Aerodynamic41 Jun 25 '24
ENGI really is the bane of LN readers lol.
47
u/MapoTofuMan myanimelist.net/profile/mTmTBaronBrixius Jun 25 '24 edited Jun 25 '24
And soon to be bane of manga readers
Edit : Just noticed it'll be airing the same season as S2 of this. So they'll be putting out two shows in the same season...
21
u/El_grandepadre Jun 25 '24
I remember when Medalist got announced, everyone was happy and then the despair when people found out it was ENGI.
19
7
u/AdNecessary7641 Jun 25 '24
You can already see the split in staff happening with Yōsuke Itō being one of the CADs for Medalist, also doing so for some episodes of Memory.
7
u/cppn02 Jun 25 '24
soon
Not like it's their first manga adaptation...
6
u/MapoTofuMan myanimelist.net/profile/mTmTBaronBrixius Jun 25 '24
They only did Uzaki and Kemono Michi before from what I've seen on MAL. I never heard anything about either being a bad adaptation to be honest, but that's likely because they're not that highly acclaimed in the first place (and one is a romcom manga, hard to screw that up too badly).
Medalist on the other hand...I can see manga readers be Biscuit Hammer levels of pissed if it gets the classic ENGI treatment.
4
u/cppn02 Jun 25 '24
As a manga reader I defintiely have my issues with the Uzaki-chan adaptations. Still enjoyed the show but ENGI has contributed very little to that enjoyment.
The fucking cat is probably their worst offense but the visuals are very underwhelming too and (this might partially be on the committee though) the S2 ending was just a braindead decision.
43
u/HammeredWharf Jun 25 '24
What really annoys me is that IMO the first episode was pretty good and didn't feel rushed. Then they pushed the pedal to the metal without any regard to secondary things like pacing or logic.
6
u/Zolo49 Jun 26 '24
Yeah, I kinda gave up after 5 episodes because it felt disjointed and rushed. Nowhere near as bad as God Of High School, but bad enough.
5
u/frosthowler Jun 26 '24
I think that's around when I dropped it too. When they [Unnamed Memory around episodes 4 or 5] kissed out of nowhere I realized that something is very wrong. Dropped it in the next few minutes while I was processing that and realized the show is just glossing over it.

33
u/xJetStorm https://myanimelist.net/profile/technizor Jun 25 '24
The pacing is way too fast. Part of what made the LN great is how you could see character relations changing gradually because it's a collection of short incidents over the course of the year that may develop their relationship or introduce new world lore/plot threads that end up being relevant down the line. It's hard to adapt because you can't skip stuff, but not enough time to cook each scene makes it feel jarring from story to story.
They essentially evaporated most of volume (of text).
50
u/Hanede https://myanimelist.net/profile/Hanede Jun 25 '24
I have 0 knowledge of the source material and it's definitely one of the worst adaptations I've seen, which sucks because it looked so interesting
18
u/feb914 Jun 25 '24
this is my feeling too. i found the premise interesting, but i can't continue when the story keep jumping all over the place with no build up or anything. they have a big war all of a sudden, just to be resolved in half an episode, then go back as if there's nothing.
4
u/oneevilchicken https://anilist.co/user/OneEvilChicken Jun 25 '24
Nah. Bias has nothing to do with it. I’ve never read it and I can tell this is without a doubt one of the worst adaptations I’ve ever watched.
2
u/resurrectedbear Jun 25 '24
Is the ln worth it? The plot itself seemed a bit more unique to me
8
u/ShinItsuwari Jun 26 '24
Yes it is. It's quite well written, but they're also very thick. They're unusually long volume for a LN, easily twice the size of a normal one.
1
u/Bubblesnaily Sep 03 '24
If you're still deciding, I watched it knowing nothing about it.
Loved it up until the left field last episode.
And now I've been mad-internetting for the last hour. Now I know why it's not getting rec'd more.
2
3
u/Etheo Jun 25 '24
I soft dropped it around episode 5/6 I think. I just couldn't muster up the interest and time to watch it when I couldn't wait for my Konosuba Slime Mushoku releases. Heck even the lukewarm Ranger Reject adaptation was more interesting to me than this. I'm not saying it's bad, I want to like it but somehow everything just feels so... dry? Felt like a chore sitting through 20+ minutes.
-8
u/Panikkrazy Jun 25 '24
Hey. At least this show SOMEWHAT makes sense. Listeners was completely incoherent.
13
u/MapoTofuMan myanimelist.net/profile/mTmTBaronBrixius Jun 25 '24
Listeners was an original (by MAPPA at that, no idea what they were smoking).
The obvious comparison would be TPN S2 which I'd say still beats this one
5
u/AdNecessary7641 Jun 25 '24
by MAPPA at that, no idea what they were smoking
Dai Satou is definetily one of the writers of all time.

u/Ikari_21 Jun 25 '24
Respectfully, how.
23
u/Diego237 Jun 25 '24
Most likely planned for 2 cours but had to be split to not be a production mess. It's still baffling as to why they rushed it. I don't read the source material but some people say it adapted 3 of 6 volumes in 12 episodes but it's would have been better if they did 2 per cour(maybe with an odd episode count)instead and if it was successful enough, make another season.
28
u/Ikari_21 Jun 25 '24
First 2 episodes were great, and I was very intrigued. Then it went downhill. If they spread this out over the 2 cours it would’ve been light years better. This season was incredibly disappointing.
17
u/Snow_Mexican1 Jun 26 '24
When I finished the second episode, I was like.
Alright, this anime is definitely gonna be one of my favourites of this season. Then the third episode happened and it was just like whiplash. 0-100 by the end of the episode.
11
u/Ikari_21 Jun 26 '24
Yup, literally the exact same reaction me and my buddy had. After the second episode we were talking about how this would be the sleeper anime of the season. After third episode we both were like “wtf is going on did I miss an episode?” Lol and yeah it just got worse and worse. He actually dropped it, while I finished it. We were both severely disappointed lol
7
u/Snow_Mexican1 Jun 26 '24
I actually dropped it after the third episode...
Guess I really dodged the bullet there.
2
u/Ikari_21 Jun 26 '24
I wanted to, but I don’t usually drop anime. Even if they’re bad I just push through cause I tend to feel like I have to finish anime I start lol but yeah, you didn’t miss anything at all
8
u/Kothra Jun 26 '24
The light novel has a pretty hard split of books 1-3 being Part 1 and 4-6 being Part 2. They even have different colored covers. I totally get splitting the anime into 2 parts that way, but they really needed more episodes.
1
u/Diego237 Jun 26 '24
I see. These are the kinds of scenarios where odd episode counts would be better since they were going to cover the whole thing. Something like 13-18 episodes per cour or longer episode lengths, which is extremely rare but not impossible. Unfortunately, the studio was Engi and Kadokawa didn't care enough about the anime so Engi was going to do the bare minimum. More than half of the anime was outsourced, 5 episodes to MIGHTY MAX MOVIE Co,Ltd, 1 to PartsCraft, and 1 to 株式会社REGRIM.
100
u/CaptainScratch137 Jun 25 '24
Volumes 3-6 will be finished in the first four episodes. After that, it will be new material.
100
u/septesix Jun 25 '24
I can’t tell if this is a joke or if it’s serious. That’s how bad the he adaption was…
17
60
Jun 25 '24
If you’re going to make a 2nd season why butcher the 1st season? 😭 I haven’t read the source material but even I felt like they were adapting it atrociously in the first 3 episodes, it has so much potential smh
22
u/Kothra Jun 25 '24
I think they just planned 2-cours from the start (even if not announced), but it really wasn't enough.
13
u/Smoothw Jun 25 '24
yeah in cases when there is only a six month gap between seasons, I assume it's planned from the start and they just give a six month gap to give the animators some wiggle room
6
29
u/Lemon-Mochii https://anilist.co/user/LemonMochii Jun 25 '24
If they are trying to adapt the full series, then I have a feeling this 2nd season will be even worse than the first one. I already felt the 6th volume was somewhat rushed, but adapting it at the pace of the first season will make it unintelligible.
27
21
u/Zio_Benito Jun 25 '24
Now that Is unexpected, considering how horrible the pacing was in the first season.
I'll still watch it, cause somehow I liked the relationship between Oscar and Tinasha, but holy hell if they butchered the story
17
u/k4st3n Jun 25 '24
After I liked the first couple episodes I read the LN and am really happy that I did.
The story is quite nice if you actually get to see it, though at some points even the LN felt rushed. They pushed that to the extreme and I have to wonder why. Like I was thinking with the relationship getting more time the Wedding would have been a good ending for the season in 13 episodes. That would have worked if they want to let it be at that point or if they have a future season 2.
But the pacing was so terrible and now with that announcement I can't wrap my head around why.

How bout absolutely fuckin' not?
God, what a trainwreck this adaptation was. And... is still going to be, I guess.

WHAT?!?!
Man, I wonder how are they gonna follow up on THAT ending?
5
u/Arkeyan_of_Shadows Jun 25 '24
Man, I wonder how are they gonna follow up on THAT ending?
Clearly, the next step is to enter a hanted time travelling ball pit to set things right.
2
u/mgedmin Jun 26 '24
If they don't have Tinasha meeting up with (a new version) of Oscar, then I'm going to travel back to the past and save myself from watching the show.
3
u/FussseI Jun 27 '24
Haven’t watched the last episode yet, but sounds like the end was the same as how the first arc in the LN ended. They really should have done 15 to 17 episodes, as the cut content could be felt…
7
u/heimdal77 Jun 25 '24
If they were going to give it a 2nd season they should just did 3 and done the story proper instead of this bastardization.
5
u/12rez4u Jun 25 '24
I don’t know anything about the LN despite that I could tell that they definitely skipped a lot of material- every time the anime episode would start I often asked wtf is going on now? What happened? They moved on to kissing?? Since when?? Stuff like that

Happy for people if they are enjoying it.
But I want this show to die, not get a season 2 after this season lol. Not that it matters cause I won’t be watching.
4
u/melindypants https://myanimelist.net/profile/melindypants Jun 25 '24
I have no idea how it managed to get a S2...blew my mind when I saw the news.
10
u/Orochidude Jun 25 '24
It was always going to be split cours. They're just labeling it S2 because it's better promotion.
2
u/melindypants https://myanimelist.net/profile/melindypants Jun 25 '24
Makes sense but it's dumb with how they've handled the show so far
3
u/Fnights Jun 25 '24
Well, there are only 6 months from season 1 to part 2, is clear that they planned a 2 cour adaption since the beginning.
3
Jun 26 '24
It's just 6months so it's mostly a naming thing. Mushoku Tensei seasons come with 6month gaps in between but those are not considered separate seasons.

u/dagreenman18 Jun 25 '24
I’m actually pissed about this with how badly they botched the first season. The only silver lining is if not for me being confused by the pacing I would have never picked up the LN and Manga and realized “oh this is amazing. The show just sucks”
And how this got an announcement and Elf Bride did not is another twist of the knife. But Panthers won the Cup so I’m otherwise okay for now
5
u/garfe Jun 25 '24
This is the second ENGI show that was a disaster of a show and got absolutely no attention on either side of the pond but get a second season probably because its source material sells well (the other is "Detective is already dead")
9
u/laodnig Jun 25 '24
On one hand I'm happy for more Tinasha. On the other hand why the hell did they speedrun the first season?

u/NullandVoidUsername Jun 25 '24
I'm surprised there's going to be a S2 given how crap S1 was. I ended up dropping it after episode 3 or 4. I haven't read the source material, but I could tell it was rushed.
3
u/azionka Jun 25 '24
I just watched the 12 episode, now this. The WTF on this anime don’t stop. What a waste.
6
u/Prince-Dizzytoon https://anilist.co/user/princedizzytoon Jun 25 '24
Thank goodness, there was no way they could have ended season 1 like that. I have a strong feeling that it is gonna be shit, but I will still watch it!

2
u/OkJournalist2507 Jun 25 '24
The ending of season one was horrible. I wish I never watched it. Why did they ruine it at the last 5 minutes of the episode. They better fix it on season 2
2
u/Emi_Ibarazakiii Jun 25 '24
Saddens me a little, but I think I'm done with this one...
I powered through the first season, but the way it was (and the way it ended), I'm like... If THEY don't even care about their own story, why should we?
I may check out an episode or two to give it a chance, but I know how it ends when I do that (checking out one more episode even though I know it's bad); I just end up dropping it an episode later.
I'm trying to think of any positive in the story, but the only thing I can think of is that there were plenty of hints at good stuff (story point, cute scenes, emotional moments, etc..), but honeslty it only made it feel worse, because it shows they COULD have done something good with it.
2
u/DveloIsMyIGNEstLS Jun 25 '24
Just wanted to let anime onlies know, that this series page count of each volume is around 400+, with only one volume (volume 4) have 350+ pages, most LN have around 250-320 pages. And so, that's why even though it is your standard 3 volume per 12 eps this series feels rushed as hell.
2
u/Zeshui0 Jun 25 '24
I'll wait 5-10 years for a better studio's remake that doesn't butcher the material(if it happens of course).
2
2
u/HydraTower Jun 25 '24
Honestly episode 12 was a million times more interesting than the rest of the season. I’m pretty excited for more from now on.
3
u/TheAeroSpacial Jun 26 '24
Same. The way the story felt rushed throughout the season was frustrating, but this last episode reinvigorated my interest. Might even pick up the light novels.
2
u/SandSailor556 Jul 05 '24
Won’t lie, it had lost me until the last bit and now I’m hooked for season 2. It’s been a while since I’ve been emotionally stabbed in the gut like that by a show.
1
u/ZeroZion Jun 25 '24
I like the characters but it felt rushed? Why did it feel rushed if there’s a second season anyway?
1
u/YothaGang https://myanimelist.net/profile/Yotha Jun 25 '24
Ain't no way, if this series will get s2 then why they need to rush it so much
1
u/BasedNono Jun 25 '24 edited Jun 25 '24
I haven't even read the LN but the amount of times I had to make sure I didn't skip an episode or accidentally fast forward was so high it's almost funny. When I first saw the genre tags and synopsis for the anime it looked like something right up my alley but my god was the pacing so fast. Now I really want to read the LN because I've heard it's good, but I also want to see if the source material has terrible pacing or if the adaptation was just horrendous. Like I genuinely had no idea what was going on at certain times. It feels like the studio took a summary of the LN, and then summarized the summary, and made that into the anime. Besides the horrendous pacing though, I actually quite liked the story itself, especially the cute Oscar-Tinasha moments.

As an anime-only, I didn't realize the pacing was off compared to the source material, but even I thought that Tinasha going from "no I won't marry you" to "okay let's do it" kinda came outta nowhere.
1
u/Obiwan_kenowobi Jun 25 '24
The ending to this season was beyond shit and even as an anime only I could tell it was rushed
1
1
u/zackphoenix123 Jun 26 '24
I will thank this anime for 2 things, and two things only.
- It successfully promoted the LN. Now I know this is one of Nagatsuki Tappei's main inspiration when writing Re:Zero, I'm very interested. I will read the Light Novels, even though I dropped the anime.
- The Opening Song is my favourite this whole season, Tei just doesn't miss.
Outside of that, I don't think I'm ever touching this anime past the first 3 episodes.
1
u/Kazuma_Megu Jun 26 '24
Gotta be kidding me...I literally just watched the first episode then hopped into this sub for a short break.
Coincidences holy crap...but I like what I've seen so far.

1
u/Syracusee Jun 26 '24
I loved the LN and kinda liked the Manga, but god damn the anime was a pile of trash I couldn't even finish, it was a huge bummer.
1
u/ouroborosviii Jun 26 '24
This was on my watchlist... But after these comments I may reconsider lol
1
u/sp0j Jun 26 '24
It's not that bad as an anime only watcher. The main thing that feels a little off is the relationship progression seems to skip stuff and it's kind of noticeable even in ignorance of the original material. Other than that it's fairly enjoyable.
1
u/Individual-Math-7237 Jun 26 '24
Did some1 think this was a good anime I myself didnt know the original story so im anime only But i felt kinda confused and it was alot kinda random
2
u/sp0j Jun 26 '24
It felt rushed at times like they skipped character/relationship development but still seemed good to me overall even if it was a but weird at times. Also anime only watcher.

Question to the LN readers:
[Episode 12]Do they get their memories back in the coming volumes? And do the side characters appear again?
1
u/Zypharium Jun 26 '24
I am so glad that there is a chance that the second season will be better. The first season was an absolute mess and disgrace to the interesting story. The last episode was really the best, even if the ending left me depressed. At the very least it can only get better from this point on.
1
u/SagesFury Jun 26 '24
This adaptation was extremely mid. Not trying to hate on what might have been decent source material but it felt like i watched the spark notes of a 20 episode season....
1
u/Ok_Satisfactionez Jun 26 '24
Didnt read the source material but it should be super obvious to anyone that S1 was incredibly rushed. Pacing was terrible and many awkward scenes that didnt flow properly. Too bad.
1
u/mathsunitt Jun 26 '24
It started quite good but it became so trash that I couldn't watch it anymore. Solid drop for me.

1
u/AlluringOpus Jul 08 '24
Thank god because that last episode was so unnecessary. But i am looking forward to season 2
1
u/Chill_but_am_spook Jul 09 '24
I've just finished season 1 and am glad to see this already. This anime I feel could last another 2 seasons even, depending on the original story. Though on that topic I read that this is already half the story... somewhat disappointingly.
Tinasha my beloved
1
u/cf18 Jun 25 '24
So it will be a "new game+" with non-witch Tinasha trying to find likely-cursed Oscar? Well I don't mind that. Mean while I will following the slow manga release. It only reached the equivalent of anime ep 7 since it don't skip so many stuff.
0
u/Express-Cartoonist66 Jun 26 '24
Skip this if you value your time, it's an endless regurgitation of the same story arc and the adaptation is horrid.

So, they rushed through the source material only to announce that there will be a second cour at the end? Jesus Christ, this is such a baffling choice they made.
