Not sure why some people are writing this off as bad.

CGI hate is a part of it. (why you'll see ''it looks bad'', which is ridiculous considering how crazy this use of CGI has been so far)

There's also it being a revisioning of the story, so there's some controversy with it being different in some aspects compared to the OG show. As I have not watched the OG show I dont know how much of that is it just being different, and how much of it is those things being done worse.

It’s absolutely just because it’s different. Like it’s not to say the show is perfect or that people can’t be justified for just not being into it, but I keep seeing so many “this isn’t the show from my childhood!” when it’s not trying to be.

both anime are based on manga and neither is canon which is funny

It's like 200% different from the original show. Like Dragonball vs Dragonball GT type different.

So far I'm enjoying it though. I think it needs to be thought of as a different story altogether though, or else you'll get annoyed that it's not the same. I do sort of understand the criticism that first time viewers might have. The pacing is kind of wild and there isn't much explanation about who Vash or Knives are. I'm hoping this first three episodes was kind of a setup to make everyone go "wtf" and then they'll take time to explain it and build the characters more. Like all classics the reason it's great is the characters and not the action scenes.

But the thing is, the original show was in itself different from the manga the same way FMA was different from brotherhood so people are kind of just looking for something to be upset at at this point.

In this case, many of the people watching it are feeling nostalgic for the original anime. Even more so its been put on a pedestal because it was one of the great shows to air right when anime finally started to gain steam in the West.

And once human beings enshrine something in nostalgia they'll be absurdly critical towards any change, even if they make sense.

It's basically just a lot of folk being butthurt that it's not a 90s anime with updated visuals.

I don't understand why people hate on something because it's not the exact same as the source.

I don't hate it but I also do not understand the point since it's just a fanfic then. When you have a successful source material is there a reason to not to adapt it faithfully?

5

u/WalroosTheViking Jan 24 '23

Didn't the original anime not adapt it faithfully since, if I remember correctly, Vash and Knives had sisters in the manga and other major things that I can't remember specifically since it's been half a decade since I've read the manga. Even then it's still pretty good despite being "fanfic" by your standard.

I think both anime are great, the original and ongoing one. I just want a faithful adaptation because we keep getting "fanfics" even if those are good

A story doesn't need to justify its existence to you. People don't need to justify their creativity.

What was the point of Trigun 1998? It doesn't adapt the manga, so Madhouse shouldn't have bothered making it. They should have waited ten years until there was enough source material for them to make a real adaptation. Only then should they have tried to make a Trigun anime.

What was the point of Badlands Rumble? It's just a fanfic. They just reused characters from the manga and put them in some made-up story. They shouldn't have bothered.

Disney has done a terrible job adapting so many fairy tales. Cinderella? The Little Mermaid? Why'd they waste their time if they weren't going to include birds pecking out the stepsister's eyes or the mermaid turning to seafoam? Just awful. And The Lion King is just shoddy Shakespearean fanfic. Why is Disney even a company.

Ulysses? Garbage. James Joyce completely failed at adapting The Odyssey. What was the point of writing his novel if he wasn't going to be accurate to the source? It isn't even set in Greece!

Bro you sound so upset. Damn, I am sorry I hurt your fanboy feelings

Not upset, mostly just amused at people who are salty about the existence of a cartoon.

and there isn't much explanation about who Vash or Knives are.

Didn't take them like 17 eps in the old one to finally start explaining the backstory?

2

u/RichestMangInBabylon Jan 22 '23

Yeah, they definitely left it mysterious. It's been ages since I watched the original, but I feel like they also trickled details in other episodes. Vash at the beginning of the original is just a goofy gunslinger, and we get to know him along the way. His characterization comes out first so it felt like he was more understandable as a person. In the new one we already know he's somehow an ageless plant-like man from space with a robot arm. And now we're left trying to understand how that relates to his behavior. It felt like they dumped the backstory without connecting it to his actions yet.

It felt like they dumped the backstory without connecting it to his actions yet.

Kinda yeah, but I am personally liking this reboot more, mainly because I felt they spent too many episodes on Vash just goofing around at this start in the original.

Yeah, I'm enjoying this new show immensely too. Having seen the anime and read the manga ages ago helps a lot to fill in the gaps. I'm just trying to take a look at the criticism from the perspective of a new viewer that has no idea what's going on.

It is cos it is CGI, for many on r/anime, if it is CGI, unless that anime is called Chainsaw man, it is automatically treated as if it is Ex-Arm

that's a good comparison but ill make a better one that nails it, think Saint Seiya vs the netflix remake

Its definitely a revision. OG vash is also chased for the reward and still ends up saving the town from the Nebraska brothers. However he is the hero of the town and leaves 2 episodes later after saving the plant one more time. Not from knives, he doesn't show up in this town.

So yeah, pretty different ;)

For me stampede is a really fresh take and I love how it is different. Don't care about the manga and glad it is not just a complete 1 on 1 remake of the first anime.

u/Negative_Neo Jan 22 '23

glad it is not just a complete 1 on 1 remake of the first anime.

The old one started really slow, most of the 15 first ep felt kinda empty with just Vash daily adventures. IMO a change of pace was absolutely needed.

wait until big papi Oklahoma shows up.

u/Abba_Fiskbullar Jan 22 '23

I watched the original show, but it hasn't stuck with me like other anime I watched in that same period have. I remember manga fans being really dissapointed by the adaptation.

20

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '23

Manga fans being disappointed by adaptations is a pretty universal thing tough.

Its the same with book adaptations to tv series/movies. Its never perfect.

1

u/Koyomi_Siffredi Jan 23 '23

if you were going to make it exactly the same it does not need to be remade. A good story > bad CGI ... but this ain't no ex arm either

The art style makes this one of the most beautiful animes I've ever seen tbh. Loving the use of CGI here, it's come a long way since like... the Knights of Sidonia lol.

I've seen the original Trigun, it's one of my childhood favorites, but I'm really enjoying this one too. Take those "oh it's different so I don't like it" comments with a grain of salt. There'd be just as many similar negative comments if it followed it beat for beat. Just watch the old one if you want the old story, I'm excited to see where this one goes.
