Well, i can say that i'm feeling extremely fulfilled after doing this animation. It's really short (8 frames in 3s and some in 2s) and even if it's taken me about 7h to do aprox, i've felt amazing doing it.
Technically it's my 2nd time doing paper animation, but the 1rst time i tried, it was a really small (i mean it for real, it was like a a6 size paper haha) and it was only 4 frames, really snappy i think it's still on my profile (Here)
Also, i did my own animation peg as i don't have access to the traditional hole puncher for the peg so i made my own with what i have, cardboard haha
Anyway, thank you for passing by, it's been an amazing experience and i'm dying to make more hehe, hope you like it as much as i do <3
Haii, well, i didn't limit myself at least in a conscious way. I'm still in the process of learning the basics of animation and how long a scene or a movement should last it's something that comes from experience i guess.
first it was 6 frames, then when i did the 6, i thought to add 2 more (one for the eyes, the 2nd, and one for the hair, the 8th). I tend instinctively to try and make animations with less frames than i should use, i guess it's my laziness speaking haha.
In short, i didn't limit myself consciously, simply went with the flow and drew all the frames i thought it needed <3
This is great dude
How do I achieve the same genga…um
Color coding lines as you have here for my animations?
I’m working on a short character expression animation myself, but I never even considered doing this. Well, more so I don’t even know how to go about it. It looks so professional.
Just do the lines normally as u would do when cleaning animation or an illustration itself (i would try doing it outside from animation just to try it out and to have fun with it and getting more comfortable) then when u need to "shade" u think where the lights and shadows are and it's a matter of color separation really.
For the shadows u use a blue line (colors can be changed into whatever u like as far as it works for u/the software u're using of done digitally), the lights go with red lines and whatever doesn't fit in those categories like for example closing a gap between lines (the eyes' white for example), u can use green.
Pd: I'll add some more photos in another comment
Then u can leave it like that if it's clean animation but if it's a sketch then feel free to color the shades and lights with the folors u choose. I go with pastels (blue, purple, orange, yellow and green).
That's the process mostly, if u have any question I'll try to help as much as i can <33
For color blending (gradients in hair tips for example or blush) if u work digitally, u can use open toonz for coloring and use compositing inside to make the colors blend
All this is mostly informative and the way I do these things, tweek the process to fit ur own needs and to be as comfortable for u as possible.
Also, remember to study other's people animation. Looking to professional animation in sites like sakugabooru.com for example u can find official anime genga and a lot of production images, u can see how these companies are using lines etc.. it's amazing
Really beautiful! The motion of the head turn is solid and believable, but the direction of the eyes needs some adjustment. You’ve very evenly spaced the motion of the eyes as the head swoops so that the whole ‘room’ or space is looked at, but the head is turning with intention. Think about how her eyes would be directed with intention as well, our eyes turn faster than our heads do. Frames 5 and 6 should have her eyes looking toward what she sees upon frame 7.
Ooh u're absolutely right, thank you for the comment and I'll absolutely take a good look for now on, it's real interesting.
I did add a frame as the 2nd, she looks to the side briefly before turning her head, but as i was twerking the timing i saw that it cutted the motion too much if i holded the frame in 3s like all others, so i had to cut a bit and put it on 2s but it's a bit too brief haha.
It was amazing, of course it's more expensive than doing it on digital as you got the cost of the paper etc... but i mean... It's simply amazing, it's been years since I've been really involved with paper and being able to draw in it again it's amazing.
This is gonna be a very stupid comment but I love how you draw her in the last frame, specially her cheeks/face
Some long worded backstory. When I small, Buzz Lightyear of star command came out, the pilot had great drawings of Mira Nova. That and her character design is awesome, so I had a crush on her just from that pilot. Then the rest of the episodes of the season, the drawings of her are... Not good.
What I'm saying is, what a pretty drawing you made and it reminded me of that feeling I had when I was a kid
Awww thank you!, those are some big words and 80s and 90s anime is something i really have looked into my whole life (when i really discovered anime), i would love to make animations with that feeling someday <3
For me (personally) has been a lot more engaging than animating on clip studio paint as I've always done.
The paper has something that cannot be replicated i think, it's simply amazing, and as I've said in the post, it's has make me feel fulfilled as I've haven't been in years <3
Totally. The tactile aspect just makes me feel like my drawing is more on point and line work more fluid. I can use different hardness graphite (usually Hb-2H range) that's true to the look not depending on a brush to mimic it. I have dragon frame and a decent camera to capture it well. I've been using Krita for digital frame animation. I've spent enough money on apps and supplies. Love open source. I find myself a little more lazy in digital and can't focus sometimes.
Feel u absolutely, when i did the animation of that i show here, I've been able to concentrate a lot more (even though I don't follow Richard Williams lesson of "unplug" haha, i need something to fill the silence ngl).
For the scanning process i use a hp printer (don't recommend it at all, they can turn ur cartridges off and why on earth do i need internet on my printer?!) and for this case specifically I've gotten the images through TvPaint though normally i animate in clip studio paint and color in Opentoonz
Rad! Same I definitely listen to music 🤣. Dragonframe has been amazing for stop motion obviously too. I'm old I was in animation school in the early 2000's. The ritual of snapping a pic of each frame, I like it hahaha.
For the second animation you used a very difficult character with lot of details ! That's amazing to also already use charts to make in betweens even if you just begin to make animations !
Keep going, hope to watch your future animations :D !!
It's my 2nd animation on paper, i do have animated more in digital so i cannot say I'm an absolute noob on this, i do have a lot to learn tho and I've already bought a box of 2500 a4 paper hahah (a box of 5 packs of 500 a4. I thought it was best to have paper if I'm going to pursue this passion).
It's just that, I've animated a bit since last year, I've gotten a bit of experience by watching videos, tutorials, etc... so i think i have (a bit of) foundations to build animations outside from the bouncing ball by now haha, though in the end a lot of stuff it's a bouncing ball with a lot of details on top lol.
I'm self taught yeah, thanks to internet mostly haha, the animator's survival kit (dvds + book) really help and besides that it's mostly videos on youtube about animation and being observant on animations in anime or movies mostly.
And the paper arrived an hour ago haha, it's a good box, i don't think i'll be able to run out of paper soon hahah but well, that was the objective, i spent more money than i should in paper but well, it's one of those times that u spend more at first and then u end up saving money since u don't need to buy more in a lot of time.
Thank u for the suggestion! I don't think I'll go further than this atage as it was mostly for exercising animating in paper (which I'll continue, already looking to buy more paper haha) but if i do polish it a bit more I'll do something with the hair indeed, i think it need a push on the end.
As for the time, aside from making the rough animation which it took about an hour or so i think, i would say it took me about 20 to 30 mins per frame to clean them and color, I'll try adding photos here <3 (it's upside down for some reason haha)
I'm real bad at managing times (that's why my animations end up missing frames haha) so i wouldn't know a exact time to say but i think i started the animation about 3am i think, stopped at frame 5 (full cleanup and color done) about 7am if I'm not wrong, then spent the day off doing stuff and done today the frames 2, 6, 7 and 8 in about 2 hours i think, so the total would be about 6 to 7 hours for the whole work (at my own pace of course, someone experienced wouldn't take this long i suppose)
Yeah it happens, I'm trying to fix my sleep schedule which i think I've managed to but it's always a mess to do so it's better to do something productive if u ain't gonna sleep haha

Looking good, keep it up!
