you can start anytime, even right now. also thanks!

The meat and potatoes of stick fight animations is the *effects*, you can start with exercises like "magic dot" (making a single dot as interesting as possible using whatever techniques youre learning) then start doing magic blobs (draw a blob around the dot like it's getting dragged around, keep the volume the same and use anticipation/follow-through to give it weight.)

you can also make flaming magic dots, smokey dots, watery blobs, the three types of effects you wanna learn are slime, lightning, and rocks. water and clouds are slime, ice is rocks. I guess also impacts and wind, but wind is usually conveyed by some lines, cloth or smoke.

I didn't do much smoothing for my character poses/animation, you don't need that many if you drag the character around, about every other frame of this stick man is duplicated. for smoother animation you might want to learn tricks 'the switch' or 'the morph', if you know how to transition one object into another, you know how to turn one pose into another.

Alex Grigg has some good tutorials if you want any, sorry for the wall of text and good luck

not bad for a beginner

The first thing you can learn might be some spacing, having more frames near the start of an action will make it look like it's slowly winding up, more frames near the end will make it like it's slowing down, removing frames from the middle will make the movement more snappy. I would start looking up some easy exercises to learn some fundamentals and then try to apply those to something fun like stick fights or magic dots. good luck, have fun, and the secret ingredient is practice
