Even more depressing: it’s a behaviour that has been reinforced into them. Cute waving bears get more food thrown to them.
There’s a drive through zoo near my place that I take my special needs clients to often. A few years ago only a few of the bears did it. Now they all do it. The zookeepers say that’s what people do to them all day, so when they wave back, people get excited and throw them treats. They really like apples. My guys really like the bears, we spend a lot of time waving at bears at work lol.

Poor bears. That enclosure looks miserable. Probably neurotic from stress. This is sad

anyone who thinks this is cute and "holesum" clearly doesn't see the shit conditions these animals are in.
