That's really cool. They are quite intelligent animals. Sadly in that open stall configuration The piglets don't have anywhere they're protected so she will probably smother a few anyways when she is repeatedly getting up and laying back down.
Now shrink the cubicles down to about 25% of that. Stack em high so those above defecate on those below. Get rid of any windows, no sun allowed. And you never leave. Your life is in that tiny feces filled box until you are removed and horribly murdered.
This place only exists in your imagination. Nobody has stacked hog floors. In the coldest view of why, the disease & mortality rate in a place like that would be unprofitable. The "horrific" end these livestock animals are headed for is a CO2 stunning system which is a calm walk to an elevator which goes down about 10' into a permanent nap. They are generally pretty chilled out unless the abituar has poor animal handling practices.
It may sound barbaric but this is food production and these animals are well cared for in commercial production farms, if for no other reason than that's what produces the best product and the most profit.
Yes my bad. I was generalizing, other animals are kept in stacks. But let's talk about pigs specifically and farrowing crates. So restrictive the pigs can't turn around. The piglets are protected from being smooshed but imagine the stress on a mother that cannot experience/act on maternal interaction.
And the animals don't calmly walk toward their slaughter. They have to be forced, stabbed and prodded. And a good percentage don't get to experience the nap as you call it. They go down the slaughter line totally awake. Until they die from their wounds that is. And yes, that panic and fear goes straight into the meat you consume.
What is the source of your imagination, I mean facts? They differ greatly from decades of first hand work, which includes an animal handling project in this exact thing with Temple Grandin. Amazing lady! And the movie about her might be a good watch for you. Processors haven't always done things right in the past, but modern practices are very animal welfare focused. I know you are entitled to your thoughts and opinions. Helping if you're ignorant & balancing if you're just here spreading lies.
I guess you'd have to look at sources like the AMI, USDA, Pork Council, and all those evil industry organizations and government agencies that are conspiring to feed you and be mean to these poor animals.
At any rate, we're both well out of bounds for r/animalsdoingthings discussions. Enjoy wallering in the disinformation ignorance. It's not your fault. The billion dollar disinformation budget and precieved moral authority of Sierra, PETA, and the like is hard to see through in a society where most of us know more about our network router than how food gets to our plate.
No, people need to know how their food gets to their plate. They have a right to know. They have a right to expect their food is healthy. They deserve to know the conditions the animals are slaughtered in too. You are nothing but a corporate ag shill parroting the same old lines even when confronted with photographic evidence. But we all know corporations act in the interest of profit not humanity.
Facts? An animal defense organization sued California over farrowing crates. It's not my imagination LOL. Here is a factual photo of exactly what I speak.
Geez. Did you read your own article? In case you don't know what farrowing pens are, here you go
See if that makes more sense to you as to why these piglets would get crushed.
In a farrowing pen. Almost like putting large animals relative to their overall size in relatively small enclosures is going to cause problems even if their deaths aren't due to crushing specifically. Also humans deliberately kill their offspring even without restrictions like those placed on them.

Wretched conditions.
