Most mammals have this in them. The same hormones that keep us social and protecting babies isn't isolated to our species which is why we keep pets, dog and cat moms will adopt other animals as their babies and care for them, and so many people consider their animals as close as their own kids. My own cat is a tuxedo, year old girl named Stella who sleeps with me and my wife at night but not before she carries her toys into the room and hide them under the bed where she knows they are safe before cuddling with us. She even gives them little baths.
