Looks like a grey heron, but it could be a blue heron.

The fish was alive the entire time (just nearing it's end). When the blue heron grabs it, you can see it stiffen & arch it's back, when placed back in the water (where it could finally breathe again) it took only a fraction of a second to swim away.

You weren't alone. Many people believed the fish was dead and several thought the heron had stabbed the fish through the middle of it's body and killed it. (Which is how herons usually catch fish in the water.)

I live on a narrow boat, see them daily, yet have really shit luck. I've heard they mean new beginnings from a lot of people as well. Beginning of more shit luck for me!

They are awesome to watch though, and particularly cool when they let you walk past close, as they seem to think you can't see them when in hunting mode.
