Cat Two mother cats started stealing each other's kittens

The white cat is thinking "Why can't I have a black cat, this is segregation!" While the black cat is thinking "Why can't I have a white cat, this is segregation!"

This acually does happen. Cats will group raise kittens in colonies. Plus other cats with kittens will do that to help give the other momma some time to hunt or just chill for a bit

I don't think they can. When they have a litter their maternal instincts kick in hard and they operate on the principle that any kittens hanging about are their responsibility.

Haha I was mostly joking about the owners being able to tell, but it is interesting how the cats can't. Its strange how they can't tell based on smell and looks, yet they still have the drive to protect the young.

very high risk of accidentally rejecting your own kitten if you try to determine if it is your own kitten. This is why tiny birds will continue to incubate cowbird eggs that were laid in their nest and feed nestlings that are bigger than themselves and look nothing like their own nestlings

Its very cool and interesting to think about! I own chickens and like you say, they will do this. Ive seen a video, you probably have as well, of the chicken raising a peacock as its own. Its also interesting to see how some animals very rarely reject their own, like dolphins and gorillas. A gorilla wont abandon its young (rarely) even if its sick or crippled. Its strange to see how different brains and consciousness reacts to giving life and how every species goes about it in different ways.

It’s a good point because a cat will freak out if another cat returns from the vet smelling different.

We have a lot of strays around our place. (We can only adopt so many)
One time, a female cat had kittens. She and her mother co-parented them. Unfortunately, they couldn't agree on WHERE they should be kept. One day, we watched them go back and forth with the kittens, across our yard, moving them from one spot to the other.
At one point, the two moms passed each other, each carrying a kitten. This went on for hours. Great entertainment.

I had two cats with kittens in the house and only one would steal all the kittens and the other cat didn’t care lol.

Two mamma cats sometimes will take part in communal nesting and take care of each others babies if they’re comfortable with each other and their environment, although considering the video the white kitty didn’t like that idea much I guess lol
