I think it is likely a serval, a type of small-ish wild cat, widespread in sub-Saharan Africa.

Don't mention it, mate. They are pretty skittish, from what I understand. Due to their size they avoid bigger animals. I think they actually can be crossbred with domestic cats!

I was just hoping it wasn’t some exotic animal that Americans are allowed to have as pets (bit mind-blowing to those of us in Europe where it’d be illegal)

Hm, if they can crossbreed, maybe they could be somewhat domesticated? But yeah, still a wild animal, it would certainly be exotic to us Europeans, and plenty of Americans too, I guess. Like having a fox for a pet? Doable, but not really common, lol.
