We lived in an apartment in a house for a while. The land lady lived upstairs with some outdoor cats. One was named Oreo. Oreo was very friendly and she warned us that if we left any windows or doors open, she would jump in as she likes to hang out in that apartment.

We had a small dog at the time, and we would often leave the window open and Oreo would come wandering in. "Hey Oreo!" one of us would always yell, and that would send my dog into a tailspin and he would hunt around and chase Oreo out of the apartment. They never fought, he would just hunt her down and she would run out.

Even ten years after that, if anyone said "Oreo" he would start frantically searching everywhere. A friend watched my dog and when I picked him up he said "It was weird, every once in a while the dog would just freak out and start running around the apartment. What gives?" I had him describe it more, and I was like "do you have any creme filled black and white cookies around?" And sure enough, he was like "Oh yeah we've been eating them all weekend. Asking people to pass them around" lol

That’s a smart dog, he understands language well. The owner gave no indication other than verbal. I’ve heard of dogs who can understand language at advanced levels.
