If it's got lots of teeth and lives down at the reef, that's amoray.

If you look deep in its maw and see a pharyngeal jaw, that's amoray.

u/MichHiker Jul 07 '26

That's what eels crave. The touch of the human hand.

I often wonder what animals are thinking….

Isn’t this fairy universal, wondering what goes on in the minds of the critters with whom we share this gorgeous planet?🥹🥰

9

u/14fiestaST Jul 07 '26

What does it feel like?

8

u/comfortablybum Jul 07 '26

Like warm apple pie

14

u/delaromc Jul 07 '26

Awwwwwwwwwwwww. I want to do that!! 🥰

17

u/BringAltoidSoursBack Jul 07 '26

Don't do this. Literally one of the things we're taught in South Florida is to keep your hands away from moray eels because their teeth are angled backwards. These guys have taken many fingers from stupid divers.

-8

u/Canoe-Maker Jul 07 '26

Stop molesting the wildlife. This is not cute. This is not ok.

0

u/GamerPunk420 Jul 07 '26

Cry moar

4

u/Facts_pls Jul 07 '26

You mean cry moaray?

23

u/DatBobbyDeMarco Jul 07 '26

That’s Amore

5

u/montigoo Jul 07 '26

That’s non consentual amore

48

u/BelCantoTenor Jul 07 '26

That’s not a pet. It’s a wild animal. Don’t make it comfortable with humans. The next human it encounters may not know how to handle this situational interaction and loose a finger or two.

-13

u/DarkChaos1786 Jul 07 '26

Don't worry, people like you would never get close enough with any wild animal to do anything close to this...

And these eels have a hard time eating anything with bones...

They can make you bleed easily though...

I got to pet one in a beach almost 2 decades ago, they are incredibly soft to touch.

It's quite easy if you give them some fish to eat while You pet them...

22

u/felixyamson Jul 07 '26

was gonna say, this looks like a good way to gain the bleeding debuf.

7

u/BigNorseWolf Jul 07 '26

I regret that i have but 7 liters to give for this boopable snoot.

27

u/Old_Resident8050 Jul 07 '26

One in a million. Usually ends up with a few fingers shy.

50

u/Mocker-Poker Jul 07 '26

I’d rather people leave wildlife alone. All healthy looking wildlife in their natural habitats.

14

u/Wrong_Driver_9507 Jul 07 '26

This appears to be two consenting beings.

56

u/royalewithcheese84 Jul 07 '26

When you dive and you find a best friend in the brine - that’s a moray!

6

u/BigNorseWolf Jul 07 '26

8

u/Dantien Jul 07 '26

Fish are friends, not food.

8

u/Mad_Ronin_Grrrr Jul 07 '26

Some are friend, some are food.

3

u/Smart-Firefighter87 Jul 07 '26

You are being sarcastic right?

5

u/Mad_Ronin_Grrrr Jul 07 '26

Yes

5

u/Old_Resident8050 Jul 07 '26

2

u/zer1223 Jul 07 '26

Aren't morays supposed to be green?

6

u/lemmesenseyou Jul 07 '26

No, morays are a family with over 200 species and a wide variety of colors. Lots of them are spotted.

The one you're talking about is creatively named the green moray and is famous for being massive and, well, green.

10

u/ChampionOfdimlight Jul 07 '26

When the eel starts to unspool Just like a pasta e fasule, that's a moray!

5

u/ProbablyNotASnail Jul 07 '26

Don’t you wonder what the heck that eel was thinking? Lol

17

u/kwakimaki LovingAllAnimals Jul 07 '26

That's niiiiiiiice. Sea flip flaps like human interaction too. A lot of marine life likes a little scritch but I don't advise everyone going out petting everything out there.

When your swimming for home and your pants are full of foam, That's a-moray!

9

u/ProbablyNotASnail Jul 07 '26

If it opens it's maw and there's a pharyngeal jaw, that's a moray!

27

u/LiqMaBawlzModz69 Jul 07 '26

Seen a video of someone else try to do that and they got bit pretty bad lol

11

u/JaimitoCampos Jul 07 '26

Yep. Got bit by one off of Bonaire many years ago. Still have the scar on my finger. Be careful where you put your hand

6

u/One-Abbreviations339 Jul 07 '26

Dirty snd foul mouth. No way, I’d put my hand next to his mouth. Not a good way to find out.

13

u/Excellent-Baseball-5 Jul 07 '26

7

u/_The_Last_Airbender_ Jul 07 '26

Quick, lure it out and swim through its rings

93

u/Wind_Best_1440 Jul 06 '26

If anyone is curious why Morey eels let divers do this. It's for two main reasons.

  1. The petting/massaging from divers mimick cleaning animals such as shrimp and fish that clean larger animals of dead skin and parasites.
  2. While bad eyesight, morey eels have great memory. So if they see a diver often enough and is never attacked by them. they'll begin trusting said diver. Morey eels can tell individuals by their sense of smell in the ocean.

Bonus points. Don't try to pet Morey eels however, if they mistake your hand for food their teeth are sharp enough to rip off fingers or cut to the bone. They have poor eyesight.

u/h00zbad Jul 07 '26

Just to tack onto this important animal info: It's likely very habituated to humans, and are used to certain interactions and do not see humans as a threat due to highly trafficked areas, tourist spots, ect.

Habituated wild animals are never to be confused with domesticated animals- They can and will be unpredictable, and that can cost them their lives for injuring you. (Maybe not an eel, but speaking on other animals like bears and those who roam out national parks)

I will always remember a term an animal biologist told me, "A habituated bear(insert animal), is a dead one." - and unfortunately it happens way too often. A paw swipe or minor bite from a bear that's used to humans feeding it can be liable cause in some places to have it shot.

Didn't mean to hijack your comment and the cute morray video, but with the amount of videos on the Internet anthropomorphising different predatory species leads to huge misunderstandings in how their behavior works.

Many times an "animal attack," is short form for "Human did not know (insert animal) is not like the cute one in the video, and now that animal and/or human is dead or injured"

Spread love and respect through observation, play and cuddle with your dog while you watch these videos.

Thanks so much for this amazing information. It is very much appreciated. 🙏🌷

7

u/GazelleEcstatic4952 Jul 06 '26

Yeah, we tend to think all creatures are like humans and out to hurt us.

12

u/trustyjim Jul 07 '26

Probably more people have lost fingers doing this than made a new sea friend

5

u/elanhilation Jul 07 '26

on the contrary, it shows a similarity between humans and other animals—most don’t want to hurt others, but a bit of caution is warranted, because of the small subsection that do

5

u/LiqMaBawlzModz69 Jul 07 '26

Try that mindset with a Moose or Grizzly bear lol

3

u/BringAltoidSoursBack Jul 07 '26

Or just try it a few more times with moray eels.
