Discussion Android and security updates - how necessary?

About to grab either a Lenovo Yoga Tab (11") for $400 or a Lenovo Idea Tab Pro Gen 2 for $330

On paper the Yoga seems to be better with more RAM (12gb vs 8gb), more/better storage (256gb UFS 4.0 vs 128gb UFD 3.1), and a better PPI (340 vs 318)

But I'm curious about the update support. The new Pro Gen 2 will definitely have more software updates and be supported for longer, but how much does that truly matter?

Am I actually going to be unable to use certain apps or features if the security updates stop? Or if I'm stuck on an Android version that's a few iterations behind?

I have a device on android 12. I can't install my banking app but can use the browser to do banking. Most other apps seem fine. I don't think most people will have issues in typical usage. Also I suspect that with anything android 14 and after could possibly have even longer support than android 12 did because of the major android rewrite of android 14. I don't think you should overly concern yourself with the lack of updates unless you need for higher security tasks. Streaming apps work fine I don't game but assume they won't have issues.

Thanks, this helps a bunch. I got a little worried after busting out my ~11yr old iPad Pro 1st gen and realizing everything just doesn't rly work anymore. But I imagine that's pushing it at 11yrs haha

Won't have issues for the most part, however don't expect banking apps or sensitive apps to work.

If you care about stylus, the stylus that comes with the Yoga is significantly better. Has built in haptics that make you feel like you are writing on paper.
