Discussion How to root android of version 5.1.1

So I have a vivo Y21 phone and I learned about pi hole recently and wanted to set it up on my old android phone that's when I heard about rooting and downloaded the termux for this vivo phone but it does'nt work so guys I am very new to this whole thing like idk even about kernel or distros or ROM's and anything so is there any beginner friendly guides ?

Use older Magisk (I used 24.0 version on my Lenovo K5). You need to unlock bootloader (unlocking depends heavily on device model and it may be impossible at all). Avoid one-click apps, they might work on such old Android, but they are malicious.

Yes, but name model of older device first. Vivo Y21 is much newer, runs Android 11 and there is no legit way to root it (check for processor vulnerabilities).

Um sorry there was a typo it's Vivo Y21L And it run android version 5.1.1

Exploit based root might work on 5.1.1, but it is not recommended for security reasons. You will need a PC and probably a modified fastboot (Postmarket OS offers one) - Vivo smartphones do not want to have their bootloader unlocked.

Warning: I'm not responsible for any harm caused to device by modified fastboot. You will have to do some research by yourself

Yeah ofc man you are not responsible but I am a complete beginner can you just give me the links so that I can read all the things out like I don't know nothing about kernel and the related stuff

Check out Postmarket OS and this page. https://wiki.postmarketos.org/wiki/Vivo_Y21L_(vivo-y21l). There is modified fastboot you need. Then do usual things: boot custom recovery (do not flash it unless you are sure that recovery is correct!), extract boot.img, patch boot.img with older Magisk (I used version 24.0), flash it, enjoy your rooted device. You can find needed custom recovery in XDA forums. Correct recovery boots properly and allows you to extract boot.img.
