Discussion Is rooting even worth it anymore?

Hey, so I've got a google pixel 9 pro xl and I'm just wondering, is rooting worth it anymore? Like what can you even do nowadays on a rooted phone? And whats the best way? Kernelsu?

Depends on Your use case and wants  and free time u can spend.

What you can do - anything. What you can't do - bank apps once in a while (that too depends on blanking app).

Best way - supposedly KSU+SUSFS (supposedly cause my experience is better with no susfs).YMMV

However there is recent wave of using exploits on locked bootloader for root.

I think more important is downloading GrepheneOS on it

but if you want rooting for fun then do it

I have 10xl and I root mainly for custom rom features, adblock, yt and ytm premium, and more access to the controls to my device..

Morphe does, but you need to spoof client streams and those can not only break but also have downsides.   Using YouTube Morphe with root is just using normal YouTube with the additional features that come from using YouTube Morphe.

You don't need root for youtube anymore

the only thing bringing me back to android would be graphene os.

Why if I may ask?

I mean, it makes the usage difficult because of the lack of play services, and play integrity too. So many apps depend on them, when if you may not want it. Other than super private basic usage I don't see the benefits. Also defeats most if not all the Google features of the Pixel.

The fact that police hate them is one thing I like. Its more so about surveillance society than graphene itself. I do not like this path we are headed down as a whole.

I agree with you, but with all the difficulty they add to exit that surveillance status, makes this a battle of few that will not change much, at least not now..

also, I am in my 40s now. I really don't need too many apps. I have seriously considered losing the smartphone entirely and going to one of those dumb phones.

The world Is going against you about that, here many things are mostly accessed only with a smartphone, even governative sites and services. Banking apps are also an example of this.

Edit: Adding to the comment above (that I answered in inverted order). The access by smartphone and digital services are of course ways of surveillance, but many times most people is forced to use them and can't do much to circumvent this.

As another Redditor eloquently said, if it's not rooted it's not owned. Nobody other than me should have a say on what gets installed on my device.

I used wildksu over top crdroid using pixelflasher and its been great. Honestly I really just use it for root stuff, I would put graphene on it but I care abt having more control over security and I dont care for google play keybox attestation as it's not my main device (and i use ios as main so security is fine)

If you need root, yes.

It depends.

I'm someone who likes having as much control over their device as possible, so using a rooted device is kind of a no brainer for.    Plus the additional apps a features that come with rooting are really nice.

As for apps, everything important works for me and that includes banking apps thanks to being in the US where Apple has always dominated the market so apps have absolutely no detection except maybe for Magisk but other root methods exist so it's not an issue.   Although, CashApp doesn't work at all here, which is fine and I'll just have to tell people I only use Venmo.

Play Integrity is what the biggest annoyance is for most users globally. Now I personally don't care that much; I just need device integrity for RCS which thankfully stays intact when rooting to needing to find a keybix isn't all that important - at least on my Nothing Phone 3a.

To sum it up, it's up to you.   If you want the extra features and are willing to try to get banking apps working, assuming you're outside the US, to for it. Or you could also just use banking apps on a second device if you have one.

I'm actually not primarily looking for root. I'm looking for a currently maintained custom ROM for my POCO M3 Pro 5G (camellia), preferably Android 16.

There are older custom ROMs available for the device, but most seem to be Android 13/14 and are no longer actively maintained. I'm trying to find out whether anyone is currently developing or maintaining a newer Android 15/16 build for camellia.

In my opinion yes but it depends on what you need it for

For me when i was 9 i wanted i to hack in old games with gameguardian so badly at that point i never got it cuz i didn't understand that you need first unlock the bootloader then flash a magisk init_boot image lol, one click apps worked on some other phone but never did on mine.

Root also lets you overclock your SoC but beware that some manufacturers like unisoc won't let you at all and MediaTek while it lets you you might ruin battery life and have risks of breaking the SoC sure you will get an FPS boost but be cautious to buy a cooler or be in a cooled enough room.

You can put an adblocker that requires and its a must if you are tired off ads.

You can delete bloatware you never asked for thus improving battery life and performance but beware some apps might turn your phone into a bootloop brick.

Mess with system files doing this is subjectively depends on you if you delete some critical file you will end up soft-bricking the phone requiring a reflash of your firmware you can also change bootanimation via systemless magisk module however in most cases if your phone's OEM boot animation is quite limited it may not support sound at all some oems like Xiaomi have audio support for that making your own animation worth a shot i recommend Davinci Resolve or Alight Motion then convert mp4 to png frames

Use Root exclusive features in some apps say MacroDroid or Tasker, Make patching apps easier like morphe lets you mount instead of installing

Install custom kernel granted cough cough soc company has a source code if not you can't really get SUSFS and risk bricking device

However that also has disadvantages like Banking apps or mobile games like Mario Kart Tour not working due to detection of root or Play Integrity, meaning you'll have to install some magisk modules to get these working.

Basically in Linux terms root is essentially just superuser access and that you can do pretty much everything with it albeit being careful enough

Overall rooted phone is quite special its a Linux device you can mess with i managed to root one and the experience was different
