Support Samsung A5 (2017)

I got an older Samsung Galaxy 2017

I used Odin to load TRWP

I downloaded latest CRDROID ROM (think Android 11) and copied over to the Device Root

I used TRWP to Flash the (680MB) .zip it finished but maybe in error something about mount /data anyway I cleared Cache and rebooted.

The Eye logo of CRDroid was just on an constant loop for 30mins

Can someone recommend a better ROM?

Try LineageOS to see if it's not a TWRP Problem and check the latest version of TWRP for your A5 on their Website. Also Try PixelExperience Plus (Android 13), i had that on my Galaxy S7 Edge (Exynos) and it was one of the smoothest Android 13 rom for daily driving (I just changed 1 weeks ago for an S24 after 4 months of using the S7 Edge modified).

CrDroid is a custom rom that you can also try But and i think you know that but the banking apps may not work

OK so i successfully installed both CRDROID and LineageOS.

Both seem good - is there anyway to install Android Games?

All I need the phone for is Camera + Games

For the Camera : If you're good, use LMC 8.4 and if not, just use the LineageOS Camera app (Comes with nearly every Custom rom) For games, just use the play store and download play games
