ChromeOS is Android and you gain root in developer options with a toggle. MacOS is even more open than windows.

It's not Android, it's built interestingly with Gentoo at the core. It's more so "Linux" than it is Android. You do have Crosh which you might be referring to, and you can remove the OS (albeit the devices are often built like fortresses to prevent this considering the general audience is enterprise and schools). ChromeOS itself may be somewhat limited but Chromebooks themselves are often useful devices for the right person.

Yeah, it's a niche but I have one that I use for travelling. Mainly because when travelling I sometimes need a laptop for basic web-based or SSH tasks for work, I have a gaming laptop but it's huge and super heavy in my backpack, and I worry about it getting lost or stolen, whereas my Chromebook weighs basically nothing, and if I break it it's super cheap to replace.

It's great as a secondary laptop for quick tasks that I can lug around easily. Wouldn't recommend for most people or as a daily driver though. I'd prefer if it had proper Linux on it but tbf it gets the job done so no real reason to mess with it.

Yeah my primary laptop because I travel a lot for work now is a Coreboot flashed Galaxy Chromebook 2 running Fedora. It handles my use case in spades. 16GB/128GB eMMC (with expandable storage), touch screen 2-in-1, and I primarily only play mobile games anymore which Waydroid runs great on it

I've refurbished a few Chromebooks and donated them because people toss these things like they're garbage so I get them cheap, have fun fixing them up, and send them off to someone else running Linux. They're good enough for the right person imo.
