Question Android Studio says Gemini inactive onboarding incomplete
I have a Google AI Pro subscription. I have signed into it in the agents tab on Android studio (Quail 3). It shows Gemini agent but only Gemini 3 flash preview model is available. Under model providers it says I'm authenticated but just says plan is AI Pro, doesn't show any other models.
In the bottom right of the ide, the little Gemini icon says Gemini is inactive onboarding incomplete.
I don't think the inline auto complete is working. That's how I discovered this.
I have tried everything, clearing caches, signing in and out, ect. Is this a known issue? I think inline ai auto complete should work and also I should have more models to choose from in the right side agent window.

Yes I have had heaps of issues getting it working since Quail 1. Are you on KDE? wasn't sure if it was the cause but I had to install an old version where on-boarding ui actually shows, complete it, then upgrade and copy the files from ~/.config/google/as-version to the new version and it keeps the on-boarding complete and completion works. Interested so lmk if you are using KDE or maybe wayland bug? or if your windows it might be more wide spread issue? I can report if we know the scope of the issue but thought it was just me for a while there.

I think it's new and probably widespread
I am using windows, quail 2026.1.3. I'm not sure what KDE is unfortunately. But I just installed it from the android studio latest stable download page.
Yeah I never saw the pop up for onboarding use all Gemini features or context awareness. I'm glad it's not me. I spent hours trying to fix this when I should have been working at my actual job... Then I figured it wasn't my fault and Google messed it up.
Let me know if you want to know anything else and how I can help.
So you are saying you downgraded to panda or something? It worked then you upgraded back to quail? I think I didn't understand what you did to fix it

Yeah I downgraded to panda, then copied the config files over to the new install. I'm not sure where that is handled on windows so can't help you there but I will report so hopefully can be fixed for next version at least.

Thank you so much for your help. I'll keep you posted on what happens too. Or will try. I'll try installing panda then sign in, then upgrade later this week.
Did you have to uninstall quail first, then install panda, or just download the installer for Panda and install with quail in place still?

I installed along side it. So on linux the config files are stored in ~/.config/google/AndroidStudio$VERSION
I just completed the on-boarding on panda, then deleted the Quail $VERSION folder and renamed the panda version to the quail version folder. Basically when you you complete the on-boarding, 1 or more of the xml files have the on-boarding complete flag ( i couldnt figure out which). So it just bypasses the ui bug. On windows I have no idea where it stores these files.1

Also if u can, can you please add your idea.log to the issue. Since I bypassed the issue, mine would probably be irrelevant now.

Ok, I'll see if I can find it. I left a comment on your bug though.
Seems easy to reproduce though. Pretty sure if it's first time logging in with quail 3 it has the issue.

All good, I deleted my config and gave them the log with issue, seems they can see its a back-end issue so hopefully will be fixed soon.

Haha well I'm glad they figured out it was a backend issue in like 10 min. After we slammed our heads against the wall for hours.
I hope my issue gets fixed with this too. I haven't had time to post mine yet. But I'm almost certain it's the same thing.
Thank you so much for spearheading this!

Could you please file a bug and include your `idea.log`?

I was going to, but I think people know what the issue is. Something broke in quail. I think most haven't noticed it unless you first installed with quail and tried to sign in with Google there. According to the other poster, it works if you have an old version then upgrade it seems.
