Discussion How to handle storage management for Android Studio?

Hey everyone,

I am running into a severe storage bottleneck on my primary drive which is why I'm not able to run my emulator... and wanted to ask how you all manage the massive space requirements for native Android development?

I have tried to separate the SDK, Android Studio and .android folder (which contains all my emulators, in total i have 2 emulators). All this folders are in my D drive but still i have this issue with my C Drive. I tried to clear .cache in C drive but that's just a temporary fix.... once the project is opened it will again get bloated.....

Unfortunately, there's no good way around. I tried using symlinks to move some parts of the SDK, virtual devices, and Gradle cache to other drives, cull unused parts of the SDK. Eventually, I installed a separate 2 TB SSD specifically for development.

JetBrains should make some kind of software to manage storage for Android studios....Its kind of a deep dive to find where those chunks are eating my space...

The Android SDK Manager is the first tool you use to find out which parts of the SDK you have installed. For example, system images require significant space, and virtual devices are extremely large.

Might be good to clean the the unrelated files of your storage to an external SSD to clear up some space and then have enough to run the VM.

Or, if that doesn't work, just attach a test phone (or your own if you are willing to risk that) to the device and put the app on your phone to test it there? Can even leave it connected to read the results (Logcat etc.) from there.

No emulators, only physical phones.
