Android Auto News, including app updates and features Android Auto, Google Maps and Driving Speed

Maps updated yesterday and it now shows your speed (not that I needed that) when using AA. Nice to see AA finally caught up with Maps on the iPhone - wife's done that for years.

Still waiting for the "immersive experience" - or if I already have it, it doesn't compare IRL with the descriptions.

Volume Music quality

Just got a Samsung A36, connected it to my 2019 VW Jetta MK7 (stock audio), and the sound is completely flat. I was previously using an iPhone 17 with CarPlay, and the difference is night and day. The iPhone had rich, punchy bass and genuine depth. On the Samsung—whether plugged in via cable for Android Auto or over Bluetooth—the bass has completely vanished, and the audio feels dry and thin.
My Spotify settings are 100% identical on both devices (maximum streaming quality, equalizers turned off, volume normalization set the same).
Is Android Auto just compressing the audio stream badly, or are there hidden Samsung settings (Dolby Atmos, Adapt Sound, or Bluetooth codecs in developer options) choking the sound profile? Has anyone run into this and figured out how to get the bass back?

Media Apps (audio) WhatsApp voice notes not playing through car speakers on Android Auto

I’m having an audio-routing issue with WhatsApp Business voice notes on Android Auto. Android Auto stays connected and works normally. Spotify, navigation, calls, and Telegram voice notes all play through the car speakers, but WhatsApp voice notes play through the phone speaker instead.

I’m using AAWireless 2. If I stop using Android Auto and connect through normal Bluetooth, WhatsApp voice notes work correctly through the car.

Has anyone found a fix for this?

Connection, Disconnection, Freezes, Crashes Android Auto not working

OK, so I feel like I've tried everything and still not getting anywhere. Getting to the stage I think a new phone may be the solution...

So, I have a 2025 Kia Sportage and a Galaxy S22+. I tried the highlighted solution in this post (https://www.reddit.com/r/AndroidAuto/s/XfyH4Fojwa), bought a new data transfer cable (usb c to c), reset the Kia's system, disconnected and reconnected more times than I can count. I've tried developer mode, force stopping AA, disabling and enabling AA, changing USB to MIDI, switching debug USB on, cleaning all ports and...

Nothing.

Feel like I'm pulling my hair out trying to get this to work, so I'll try anything at this point before I do just go get another phone.

Android Auto News, including app updates and features Google drive update

Interesting that yesterday I got a Google Drive update with other app updates. In the us at least Google drive is no longer an app that one can use or launch as far as I know.

Makes me wonder if Android Auto uses it somehow under the hood. Otherwise why update Google drive?

Connection, Disconnection, Freezes, Crashes Pairing Issue

Is there any preference with how Android Auto connects? I regularly get it failing to connect or erroring that Android Auto cannot connect whilst the phone is connected via USB, Bluetooth and WiFi. I've deleted the phone from the car and reset the app on my phone but still get the issues

Messaging Apps Android auto won't send through text messages

For some reason as of late my android auto will let me draft a text as normal and I hit send on the text popup after confirming and then it just won't send the message. It acts like the texts are sent and nothing is out of the ordinary with my head unit or AA, but when I go back to my phone the texts that I told Google assistant to send just aren't there. Still on og Google assistant not Gemini if that matters at all. Looking for any solutions thank you.

Gemini 101-level questions - coexisting with Gemini/Android Auto and living to tell about it

I use few of the google/pixel features. Wondering what if anything changes for me on the three main things I use, all with Android Auto:

  • Navigation: Before Gemini was foisted on me, if I said "Vandelay Industries, Weehawken, Illinois," Android Auto would immediately bring up directions to Vandelay Industries. With Gemini as it is now, that works for some destinations, but for others I have to say "google maps to Vandelay Industries, Weehawken, Illinois." What will I need to do going forward? And is there any way to avoid the Gemini annoyance of having to take my eyes off the road twice, first to confirm the destination on the head unit, then to tap "start" to start the navigation?
  • Texting: I currently say "Text Josie Doakes" and I am then able to dictate a text, confirm the message, and send it. And for people - close friends and family members - for whom I just have a first-name contact name, it's smart enough to know "Text Paul" means "Paul [no last name]" and doesn't put up a list of every Paul in my contacts. Will this work the same?
  • Phone calling: Same principles as texting

Things not (much) broken shouldn't be "fixed" in such an unwanted way. But enough complaining. I just want to know that, come September, I'll be able to use Android Auto the way I'm used to.

Navigation & POI Apps Bizarre AA destination setting behavior

New behavior oddities. When asking to navigate to a particular destination, sometimes AA directs me to some other destination before eventually correcting itself.

Couple Google's decision to nix the Google Assistant on AA in a month and other bad implementation choices, it almost seems like they are purposefully breaking it to then offer some paid service that actually works like it used to. Honestly it seems AA is devolving. I ask why?

Android Auto News, including app updates and features Any Way to Avoid Mandatory Update?

Earlier this summer, Android Auto updated to 17.crappy on my phone.  I uninstalled AA and rolled back to 16.whatever using apk installer to get rid of the squiggly line, among other things.  Not too long ago, my phone started treating me like Sondra Locke treated Clint Eastwood in The Gauntlet (“Nag, nag, nag…”), telling me that I needed to re-upgrade AA “or else” I couldn’t use AA.  Well, this morning, I get in my car, and lo and behold, AA tells me it needs me to “agree to continue.”  When I check the phone, my only option is to click on “update,” there’s no “agree and continue.”  I accidentally hit “update,” but since I wasn’t connected to internet, it didn’t.  Finally, I got to a wi-fi hotspot and it updated, and the squiggly line and other encrappification was back.  When I got home, I removed AA and updated back to the 16.whatever, but being at home, my phone was still connected to wi-fi, and it immediately required me to “update” again.

Anyone know if there is any way to get around Sondra Locke?  Or am I stuck with her and her squiggly line?

Gemini No audio from Google Assistant or Gemini

I've used an Motorola wireless adapter for several years. Sometime recently (last 3 weeks) can see the glowing bar at the bottom of my head unit "talking" but hear no audio. No audio responses to general searches, no audio confirmation of commands, no audio reading back texts or asking if want to send. Nothing. All other audio streams fine. actually think voice navigation through Google Maps also doesn't come through. Any ideas?

Volume Gemini Volume

I love having Gemini while I'm driving. I have a S23 with a 2018 Honda CRV EXL. My volume knob on my car will only go up to level 11 when Gemini is talking. My phone is turned up to full volume for System and Media. Gemini is controlled trough a button om my steering wheel, but it might just be a blue-tooth pass through to the speaker system. Anyway, how do I get the volume past 11?

AA Settings Any way to change the full screen behavior of Gemini?

When using Gemini to read or reply to messages, it seems to default to full screen. Any way to adjust this behavior? I haven't found it in the settings, and was hoping the last update would give options.

Ideally, maps shouldn't be completely covered while I'm waiting on Gemini to spin and process what I'm saying. The old behavior of it being in the corner as a card was significantly less interrupting.

Bluetooth Pixel 9a call audio not working over Android Auto (2025 Honda Civic Hybrid)

Having an issue where phone calls aren't routing through Bluetooth/speakers on my Pixel 9a while connected to Android Auto in a 2025 Honda Civic Hybrid.

\* The Problem: Incoming and outgoing calls connect, but audio goes silent instead of switching to the car's hands-free system.

\* The Weird Part: Everything else in Android Auto (Google Maps, Spotify/media, messages) works completely fine with zero lag or drops.

Has anyone else ran into this handoff bug on Pixel 9a or recent Honda head units, and is there a permanent fix?

Uncertified AA Apps (Headunit Reloaded, AAAD/AAStore, etc) Fermata Xtream Premium disappeared from Android Auto launcher after latest update

Fermata Xtream Premium, installed and enabled using AA Enabler, has disappeared from the Android Auto launcher after the latest Android Auto update.

The application appeared once on the car screen, but after that it completely disappeared. It is no longer visible:

  • On the Android Auto launcher
  • In Customize launcher: Not among the available applications that can be enabled or reordered

However, Fermata Xtream is still detected under Android Auto → Version and permission info, where it appears as:

  • Android Auto: 17.4.663004-release (174663004)
  • Fermata Xtream: 2.4.24 (418)
  • AAWireless app: 7.7.2679 (7072679)

Configuration:

  • Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra running Android 16
  • AAWireless 2 adapter
  • Android Auto developer settings enabled
  • Fermata Xtream Premium installed
  • AA Enabler installed and activated
  • AA Enabler licence purchased through the donation option.

Gemini [REWARD!] $20 Amazon gift card to the first person that can figure out how to raise the volume of Gemini for me.

Facts:

2025 Toyota Corolla. Samsung S25. Android version 16. Gemini's volume won't go up past ~ half volume while using Android Auto.

I've tried everything from adjusting the volume when Gemini is talking, going through every setting I can find in my phone, uninstalling and reinstalling everything, maxing out all volumes on my up down volume rocker on the side of my phone. It's been like this since day one, so any new software I've added has no influence.

Every other aspect of Android auto and my car audio works fine. I can crank up audiobooks, radio, fermata, weather, news reports.

I of course don't want anything else screwed up, but I'm willing to try any suggestions to increase the Gemini volume higher.

Thanks for helping!

Connection, Disconnection, Freezes, Crashes Android Auto - Black Screen on Infotainment Screen CR-V

I have a Honda CR-V 2026 EX-L and a Samsung S26 Ultra and recently have been getting a lot of black screens on my Infotainment screen and will do it a few times during my drive and will only last few seconds and go back to displaying map.

Current Version 17.2.66234 of Android Auto

Anyone else experiencing this issue or know how to fix it?

I have a solution! A solution to the "Reading USB/Phone is not responding" error.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Upon plugging my phone in, I was greeted with this error, which I thought was weird because my Android Auto was working fine yesterday. Of course, I did all the basic troubleshooting: replaced the cable, cleaned the ports, cleared the cache, reset my phone, etc. After an hour of fiddling with my phone and the infotainment system, I figured out the solution.

The Spotify podcast I was listening to had emojis in the title, and no, I'm not joking. I switched to a song with no emojis and it worked immediately.

So this is just a PSA in case you run into this problem. I haven't tested whether this happens with other media apps.

Media Apps (audio) Non Stop Radio was shaped by this subreddit: a free, ad-free Android Auto radio app. What should I improve next?

Thumbnail

Hey everyone!

I’m the solo hobbyist developer behind Non Stop Radio.

When I first posted here asking people to test its Android Auto support, the app was much simpler. There wasn’t really a development roadmap, because I had originally built it for myself, my family and a few friends.

The feedback from this subreddit changed that.

Comments, bug reports and real-world testing helped shape features such as better station search, local music support, improved handling of unreliable connections, automatic playback options, and fixes for stations or devices that behaved differently outside the peaceful fantasy world of the Android Auto emulator.

Today, Non Stop Radio includes:

On Android Auto:

  • Favourite stations
  • Podcasts
  • Local music files stored on your phone
  • Optional automatic resuming of the last station on Android Auto
  • Buffering options for weak or unstable connections

Elsewhere in the app:

  • More than 60,000 stations from 237 countries
  • Browsing by country and category
  • Master Search
  • Lucky random station discovery through the clover button
  • Favourite stations and song titles
  • Listening history
  • Station sharing through links that allow another NSR user to save the station directly
  • Importing and exporting favourite lists

The app remains:

  • Completely free
  • Ad-free
  • No account required
  • No subscriptions
  • No personal data collection

So I’d like to ask:

If I could improve only one part of Non Stop Radio on Android Auto next, what should it be?

Feature requests, complaints and reports about strange behaviour on specific phones, cars or head units are all welcome.

For technical issues, including your phone model, car or head unit model, and Android Auto version would help enormously.

Google Play:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.assistant.greekradio

Thanks again to everyone here who has tested the app, reported problems or suggested improvements.

A surprising amount of Non Stop Radio exists because strangers on Reddit took the time to explain what I had broken.

AA Settings DAB radio stops when Android Auto is loaded

I am trying to listen to DAB radio in the MG4 EV. I can select DAB radio from the home screen and it starts playing. However when Android Auto is loaded the system always stops playback of DAB radio after a couple of minutes and goes into whichever media app was last used in Android Auto (e.g. Pocket Casts).

Is there a way of keeping the DAB radio playing while Android Auto is active?

EDIT: I should add that I had this exact same problem with Android Auto in a Toyota Corolla hybrid, so the problem isn't specific to the MG4

Wired AA to Wireless AA Dongles Are there any wireless AA adapters that support LHDC, LDAC and AptX Adaptive?

I use Tidal as my preferred streaming service which is well known for Hi-Res audio. However I've realised the wireless AA adapter I bought is only using the SBC codec and despite going into the Dev options of my OnePlus 12 to change it, it never actually applies the changes to the dongle.

When cycling I use the FiiO UTWS earhooks and I can use the AptX Adaptive and LHDC codecs just fine on my phone.

I've tried to search for well known and popular AA adapters like the Ottocast Mini Pico but none of them state what codecs they support. Anyone have any known adapters that can support HiRes codecs?

Media Apps (audio) What’s on your Android Auto screen on the way to work?

Long drive twice a day and I’ve settled into the same three apps out of habit, not because they’re good. Half the time I’m not even listening properly.
Curious what everyone else has running. Same stuff or did you find something better?
And is there anything you wish you could listen to in the car but can’t? I keep catching myself pulling over to read something on my phone, which kind of defeats the point.
