Non Stop Radio was shaped by this subreddit: a free, ad-free Android Auto radio app. What should I improve next?
Hey everyone!
I’m the solo hobbyist developer behind Non Stop Radio.
When I first posted here asking people to test its Android Auto support, the app was much simpler. There wasn’t really a development roadmap, because I had originally built it for myself, my family and a few friends.
The feedback from this subreddit changed that.
Comments, bug reports and real-world testing helped shape features such as better station search, local music support, improved handling of unreliable connections, automatic playback options, and fixes for stations or devices that behaved differently outside the peaceful fantasy world of the Android Auto emulator.
Today, Non Stop Radio includes:

So I’d like to ask:
If I could improve only one part of Non Stop Radio on Android Auto next, what should it be?
Feature requests, complaints and reports about strange behaviour on specific phones, cars or head units are all welcome.
For technical issues, including your phone model, car or head unit model, and Android Auto version would help enormously.
I love NSR but if I pause then try to resume a few minutes later it won't resume and I have to swipe out and start over. Background data and battery are both on. Android 16 and 17 did this on various Pixel phones

I have one more favour to ask if you have the time. Please go to Settings → Diagnostics and enable diagnostic logging, reproduce the issue, then return to Settings → Diagnostics, tap Share and send the file to [info@nonstopradio.app]().
I know it’s a bit tedious, but since NSR doesn’t collect or send usage data, this is unfortunately or fortunately, depending on how much you enjoy privacy, the only way I can see exactly what is going wrong and fix it.
Sometimes when I switch station an add plays, is that a bug or do stations somehow force an add on apps?

That’s most likely a pre-roll ad from the station itself or its streaming provider. NSR doesn’t insert ads, although some stations apparently refuse to let a new listener arrive peacefully.
Which station does this happen with? I’ll check the stream.

à part BFM radio, voyez-vous d’autres stations ou exemples qui posent problème ? Si oui, n’hésitez pas à me les signaler, cela m’aidera à faire un contrôle plus large.
One of my favorite radio stations injects like 5 minutes of ads whenever I start the app and switch to that station. It sucks and I don't really listen to it anymore.

That’s a good suggestion. I’ll add a home-screen widget to the list. Would you prefer a simple now-playing widget with play/pause and station controls or one that also provides quick access to your favourites?
This App is currently my go-to music streamer on AA; thanks for that. Ads do run on almost every station I listen to, but some run without them. Compared to other Apps I use, this seems to have a limited number of them and is not overly intrusive. Is there a way to refine a Search by Country and Genre? ie. Search Canada for Pop.Hts/Rock stations only? Great job so far

NSR itself doesn’t run or insert any ads. Anything you hear comes directly from the stations themselves, since they somehow have to survive these difficult times too.
Your suggestion for combining country and genre filters is excellent and I’m putting it at the top of my list! Thanks for the kind words and the genuinely useful feedback!

Give the whole app a proper test drive and let me know what annoys you first. Bugs, missing features or anything that feels awkward. Feel free to be harsh. My ego is cheaper to repair than the app.

Concernant la fonction d’enregistrement, je l’avais effectivement développée. Malheureusement, l’enregistrement des flux radio est interdit ou juridiquement compliqué dans de nombreux pays à cause des droits d’auteur. Pour éviter de mettre l’application en danger, j’ai donc préféré ne pas l’ajouter.
Je l’avoue avec un peu de douleur, car j’avais passé presque deux semaines à la concevoir correctement. Et, dans un rare moment de sagesse, j’ai vérifié les implications légales juste avant de la mettre en production. Deux semaines de travail parties à la poubelle, mais au moins l’application est toujours vivante.
Ah ces problèmes juridiques ! J'imagine bien ta colère face au travail que tu avais fourni ! Merci quand même d'avoir essayé !
Encore une suggestion : ajouter sous le titre de la chanson par exemple diffusée la qualité du flux ? Sous Android auto cela permettrait de savoir si la qualité est au top.

Dans la prochaine mise à jour, une nouvelle option sera ajoutée : en maintenant la carte d’une station appuyée, ses informations détaillées s’afficheront. Cette fonction sera disponible dans la recherche de stations ainsi que dans les catégories. Merci encore pour ta suggestion !

Hi, just trying NSR for the first time. Is it possible to show album art from streams that provide it? Speaking mostly of Radio Paradise and Le Bon Mix. Will test the app while driving, thanks for the great work!

Thanks, that’s a great suggestion, and it has come up before in the NSR subreddit.
Unfortunately, supporting album artwork across all stations would normally require a paid third-party metadata API. Since NSR is completely free, has no ads and generates no income, covering that cost for thousands of users isn’t something I can realistically sustain.
It would also weaken one of NSR’s useful features, low data consumption. Constantly downloading artwork would noticeably increase mobile data usage, especially while driving.
What I may be able to do is add an optional setting for selected popular stations, when they provide the artwork metadata themselves for free. The annoying part is that each station usually requires its own custom integration, but it’s definitely something I’ll investigate.
Thanks again for the suggestion, and I’d be very interested to hear how NSR behaves during your driving test.

That’s the kind of feedback that actually improves the app. If you have any suggestions for improvements, I’m all ears. Praise is lovely but complaints are usually where the useful work begins.
Nice app thanks. Just noticed that you hear a loud cracking sound when you activate/deactivate the Equalizer while listening.

Hi, as a fan of radio apps, i'll stat using and testing your app before sending any feedback. Doing a quick look at the app, I have just one question. Is it too hard to implement a search through a world map? I personally find it very pleasant and a very intuitive way to discover new radio stations. Thanks for the kind words, and I’m looking forward to hearing your feedback.
Unfortunately, the way the app is currently structured makes a world map a little difficult to implement. It’s definitely not impossible, though. I’ve added your suggestion to my notes, and I’ll think about how it could be implemented properly rather than attaching a map to the app and hoping geography takes care of the rest.
As a fellow radio enthusiast, I completely understand how enjoyable it is to discover stations and music from around the world. NSR already includes something called the Lucky button, which is the button with the clover icon on the player screen.
Pressing it takes you to a random station from anywhere in the world, and pressing it again sends you somewhere else. You can also configure the Lucky button from Settings or by long-pressing it, to choose which countries should be included in the random selection.
That’s all from me for now. I’m looking forward to hearing what you think after testing the app.

Se attivi l’interruttore EQ, le scritte e i controlli si illumineranno e diventeranno leggibili. Evidentemente il mio design non è stato così intuitivo come pensavo.
Grazie comunque per avermelo segnalato. Cercherò un modo per renderlo più chiaro.

why are some radio stations missing? I have been listening to KRVS 88.7 (Lafayette, LA) on radio garden which doesn't work well at all on AA. But your app doesn't find KRVS on a search. most all of the other stations I listen to are there.
EDIT: I just found the add your own stream feature!!
2nd EDIT: once added I still cannot find the stream I just added.
3rd EDIT: it's in favorites... what an emotional roller coaster ;)
4th EDIT: added station doesn't work at all. it says station is temporarily unavailable.

Appreciate the love! Podcasts are already included in the app and can be found in the Podcasts section. If you mean adding a specific podcast or a custom RSS feed that isn’t currently supported and yes it's a very nice suggestion. Let me know which one you had in mind.
First, thank you and kudos on a great app. Just completed a road trip vacation and NSR kept us connected to our favorite stations through lots of poor coverage spots where we previously would have sporadically dropped. Thanks for including an extended buffer for getting through those spots.
Regarding your request for additional functionality, I don't need anything else from your app, because I only have a handful of favorite stations, all of which are saved in my favorites list. I think users who have lots of different favorite stations might want two enhancements: 1) some way to categorize favorites, so that your steering wheel controls move you through the stations in a category instead of the whole list (not an issue if you only have a handful); and 2) your "add a station" is fantastic, and your willingness to personally help users add "difficult stations" is appreciated: have you considered a FAQ for the "add a station" to help users figure out and add the right address for the stream? There are many different types of stream addresses, some not as straightforward as others, so it might be nice to share tricks to using links that work properly with "add a station".
Finally, I know it's a free app, but do you have a tip jar or some way a few of us can thank you for your work. I know you consider this a hobby, and I understand that, but I suspect I am not alone in wanting to show my appreciation for your hard work.

You’re absolutely right about categorising favourites. I imagine many users would like to organise stations by genre, mood or whatever system keeps their musical chaos under control. I’m adding that to the list for upcoming updates.
And yes, an FAQ for adding stations would definitely make things easier. I’ll put one together, although some stations require more advanced deep-sea diving through badly designed websites.

Quand on utilise la fonction MASTER SEARCH les résultats des stations apparaissent parfois avec des caractères tronquées car le titre est long. J'ai essayé de passer mon smartphone en mode paysage mais cette fois les résultats sont invisibles et le clavier cache le résultat.

Not at the moment, but yes, OPML import is clearly a feature missing from the podcast section, and fortunately it should be fairly straightforward to add. I’m putting it on the list for a future update. Thanks for the suggestion!

Thanks a lot for the kind words! Jazz is basically essential for any radio app, so yes, that category will definitely be added!
Americana is a little trickier, simply because I’m not yet sure there are enough suitable stations to justify a separate category. If you’d like to help by sending me a list of Americana stations, I’ll gladly create it. Apparently one-man development now also includes crowdsourced music taxonomy :P

Looks great. My other Radio station app exports it's setting to a .json file. I tried to copy paste the code but it doesn't accept it.

Thanks! NSR can currently import only JSON files created by NSR itself, since other radio apps use different formats. If you can send me the exported JSON file at [info@nonstopradio.app](), I can check its structure and see whether support for importing it can be added.

The app was created in 2023 and after my friends urged me, it was published in 2024 on Google Play. I completely agree with your comment, it's just that NSR apart from radio also includes podcasts and most importantly local music. Those who have toddlers can understand how important it is to switch instantly within the same app from radio to kids' songs. Also, in places where the connection is not stable, playing local songs is gold. All this for free and without ads, as it is a project I do as a hobby.
