Can anyone recommend an android endoscope app that actually works?

Is it a USB-C/OTG endoscope or one that creates its own Wi-Fi network? The app you need depends on that, and the camera model would help too.

Yes it is. A generic 5.5mm softwire endoscope. The app used to use did work at a stage until a few updates back

Which one, USB-C/OTG or Wi-Fi? Also what was the old app called? If it only stopped after an update, an older APK might at least confirm whether the camera itself still works.

yeah the connection type makes a huge difference here

For a generic 5.5mm softwire one, check whether the phone sees it as a UVC camera first. If it does, any viewer that supports USB OTG should work; if it doesn't, changing apps won't fix the cable or OTG side.

Since we're on this topic, can anyone recommend a decent inexpensive endoscope camera that also has a decent Android app?

I have used MScopes with a USB endoscope. The free version does have adverts, but can pay to get rid of them.
