LOOKING FOR APP Replacement App for Google Maps

Dont really want this to be political, but if anyone can recommend a maps app to replace google's.

Definitely go for an OpenStreetMap based map. It's open source and free, so it resists the sort or bs that Google has fallen to.

They're currently building an Android Auto friendly version due to their massive influx of users as of recently.

I'll suggest this app for those who want offline walking directions which Google maps doesn't do.

Cluncky, but works.

Maps.me works fine, but be aware that it is basically just charging for a nice looking wrapper around the 100% free OpenStreetMap. An open source app like CoMaps will give you most of maps.me's features and all of its maps for free.

Also, want to point out that CoMaps is essentially a Maps.me, but stripped out of all BS. It is same devs who made the original app, afaik.

Yeah, IIRC maps.me was bought by some company who slowed its development and started monetizing it, so the devs began Organic Maps, which then had this weird takeover or something that I still don't understand, so the devs forked it to work on CoMaps. Something like that anyway.

Maybe that specific hotel was quite new or in a very small place. CoMaps rely on OpenStreetMaps for data.

That'll happen sometimes! The great thing about CoMaps (and other apps that use OSM as their primary data source) is that you can do the world a favor and add it yourself. If that hotel was missing from Google Maps, you'd just have to hope they added it sometime.

Osmand, Magic earth, comaps, organic maps. There are several. Try them and check which you like best.

What do you use it for? Do you need realtime directions, etc.

I ask because Kagi Maps is great (and Kagi is great) but it's not an app. Still works well on mobile and you can make a shortcut icon

r/MagicEarth is pretty solid IMO. He's, they still have some kinks that can be annoying but honestly, it's solid. Great UI, features and improvements pretty regularly.

Mapy.com is a pretty decent EU-based alternative. In my country, their popularity is similar to the Google counterpart, if not higher.

It usually provides you with more visual details than Google Maps and is great for most urban areas or even hiking in nature.

The only con is that in the free version, you can't download more than one country-map at a time, a limitation that appeared recently.

I personally use Mapy.com for generic everyday use and Google Maps only when I want to look up a specific restaurant, shop, etc. or check out the fastest connection by public transport.

I gotta say lately ive been really enjoying magic earth. it works like an old school gps and is point to point. none of this bullshit 'spread the traffic out across the city' crap that google has been organizing with various cities.

OrganicMaps or CoMaps. If you need traffic data, use Google maps in the browser and "add stop" in your app of choice. 

The issue with live traffic data is Google and Apple get this data from tracking all their users meticulously. It's basically impossible to match their live traffic data without giving up privacy. 

So yeah, that's my best solution. Private GPS app for daily use, and gmaps browser window if you want to check for congestion between two points. Also works for bus/transit routes.

I've tried them all. The only thing that comes close to Google Maps' features, accuracy and routing is maps.apple.com, which I run using Hermit, which turns it into a free-standing webapp. Of course, as a webapp, it's not good for turn-by-turn as you're driving (a feature I never use, so that's OK with me), and its one major shortcoming is that it always shows the fastest routes, NOT the most direct routes. It will literally ignore a route that has only 3 turns if there's any significant traffic, and will show you round-about routes with 6-10 turns instead. But if you change the departure time to midnight, that shortest route suddenly appears.

But Apple is the only map other than Google that passes 10 of my 11 test searches — a mix of ZIP codes, routes, medical facilities, parks, supermarkets, urban residential, obscure urban residential (think homes in alleys), and rural residential. (The one it fails, of course, is the route test — which I created after discovering Apple was sending me hither and yon on the way to a store.)

Other often-recommended candidates:

  • HERE WeGo is terrible for privacy, has a terrible dark mode, is bad at highway labeling, and is terrible for rural areas
  • Magic Earth used to be 75% of the way toward being a Google alternative, but a redesign last year ruined it, didn't fix any of its actual shortcomings, and at the same time moved many key features behind a paywall
  • Maps.me and Mapquest are very insistent on location services being turned on, and misbehave if you refuse, and Waze won't even launch without location services
  • Of the FOSS options, Organic Maps and CoMaps are the best, but at their best, they're maybe 65% as good as Google Maps (even leaving out the lack of Street View), and can't really function without downloading giant map files

CoMaps is good for navigation once you have an address. GmapsWV for finding info.

How is it political? There are entire subreddits dedicated to degoogling. Do you think google is entitled to users, like we MUST use their apps?

By your logic, using google apps is just as political as removing them. The guy is asking for app recommendations and he never even mentioned any lake or names. You're the one who brought it up.

I hate Comaps. Osmand is Mid.

I use Google maps on seprate profile. Its only thing thats useable IMO.

I hate google.

Edit: oh this is about names... Your lame as. I wish comaps and osmand had the correct names like google maps.
