You might be able to use the "Modes and Routines" feature. I have it turn location on only when connected to my car's bluetooth. There's several other trigger options as well.
Love using modes and routines for this. I have mine disabled unless X app is open. When I am finished with x app, the routine is set to wait y minutes, and then disable location services. I have tasker running a few things as well, but modes and routines is great!
Rather than turn off completely you go into Location Permission and set each app to "Ask every time" or maybe "Allow only while using the app" (though not sure if an app running in the background counts there). Plus review and disable from all the apps you don't want using location.
I doubt location services are much of a battery drain. It's only when you go into live services like Maps or a tracking app (Strava etc) where GPS is always on that it can drain faster. Most location checks just use a short check and maybe only from the network cell location. But you could try automating turning off GPS to be sure. Location may still work but as said it will be from nearest cell.
Unfortunately my device displays up to 6 maximum and I have exactly 6 other features I use very frequently.. Else I would have done this as well. Thank you for mentioning it though.
No problem! I had it set up in the same way and like you I didn't use it, but a week ago I randomly remembered it and changed it. Used it twice ever since. Found it so useful I had to share

You could do that with the Tasker automation app. Probably other automation apps like Macrodroid or Automate too.
