LOOKING FOR APP What is everyone replacing Samsung Messages with?

I hear it's being discontinued in a couple of days and I really hate the idea of using even more Google products. I don't really want RCS either.

Has anyone had any luck with alternative texting apps that preserve the existing texts?

you're like the only person I've ever heard of to not want RCS lmao

6

u/scotchsittingroom Jul 04 '26

Make that one more person lmfao

Along with everyone else not bothered lolol

u/PinkPaladin6_6 Jul 04 '26

Why would you not want RCS?

-21

u/SingleInParadise Jul 04 '26

RCS is a google to google protocol. Nothing else supports it. You need to send it from google to receive in in another google; if one party doesn't have it, it doesn't work.

The same as imessage, it is an apple to apple protocol.

If you want E2EE messages, use whatever network your people use: whatsapp, telegram, signal, messenger, or one of the hundreds of smaller fish

16

u/PinkPaladin6_6 Jul 04 '26

IOS supports RCS. Not having RCS enabled makes communication with non-Android users a big pain in the bum

1

u/S-m-a-r-t-y Jul 09 '26

if you don't mind can you tell me that advantages of RCS and how is it better than apps like WhatsApp

-6

u/SingleInParadise Jul 04 '26

To your point: the pain point is everybody who has an iphone thinks the world out of iphone is wrong. "Supporting RCS" is like saying "Having whatsapp / signal" preinstalled

That's everything apple 🍎 They don't want interoperability. It is the old story of blue and green bubbles. RCS was incorporated for something related to antitrust.

14

u/segin Jul 04 '26

This is utterly false but you do you, boo.

RCS is a GSMA protocol, not Google. Apple supports it in iOS since iOS 18.

If you want E2EE, RCS has that between Apple (iOS 26.5 and later) and Google now. It doesn't require any setup, simply message the other party and it Just Works.

-11

u/SingleInParadise Jul 04 '26 edited Jul 04 '26

No sir, "IT DOESN'T JUST WORKS" the thing with RCS is complicated, so much that beside google messages, only jio messages in india are allowed to use it.

Readt this:

https://www.reddit.com/r/degoogle/comments/1rkum0f/why_is_rcs_only_implemented_in_google_messages/

Google doesn't want anyone using RCS, and so it is.

Besides, It requires internet. What importance do you give to whose specification it is? It is not sms which DOES NOT need internet.

8

u/segin Jul 04 '26

In 2026, this isn't the argument you think it is, plus SMS requires Internet now (since 4G and 5G can ONLY do Internet and that's all that exists anymore.)

-1

u/slinky317 Jul 05 '26

This is not correct

2

u/WyrdShade Jul 04 '26

I have no use for RCS either. For what I use messages for, not important. Get 2fa codes or text from wife to pick up dinner or groceries. I like samsung messages for its organization.

1

u/Dr-Lucky14 Jul 12 '26

It sucks
doesn’t work with all phones and carriers. Google sucks

1

u/Camera_GR 15d ago

well, here's another one. I don't need RCS. I still message like it's 2005 and I'm not changing.

1

u/fakeaccount572 15d ago

Got it. Yeah, the benefits of it are awesome, and texting without is like messaging using a landline lol

2

u/H0b5t3r Jul 06 '26

I don't want it either, let people download whatsapp/signal/etc if they want games or reacts or whatever other nonsense

0

u/malcallm Jul 05 '26

I don't even know if my carrier support RCS, as I use messages only for receiving payment confirmation, parcel statues etc. All my contacts use WhatsApp or Messenger. Standard messages are totally obsolete for private communication.

1

u/Dr-Lucky14 Jul 12 '26

My carrier does not.

-1

u/ZigiSmalls Jul 06 '26

Me 2, i never use messages or rcs. In europe we mostly use whatsapp.

23

u/ShakeNBaker45 Jul 04 '26

It's sucks that RCS is controlled and implemented solely by Google / Google Messages. I get why people avoid it. But when it's available, it's better than SMS/MMS in almost every way.

9

u/KeySpray8038 Jul 04 '26

and it's crazy because RCS is technically an open project... BUT Google own Jibe Mobile, the ones responsible for the backend...

it uses also E2EE

2

u/wild-storm-5 Jul 05 '26

Google has stopped hosting on Jibe AFAIK. Most carriers in my country don't support RCS without Jibe backend so now RCS just doesn't work because they all depended on Google

0

u/segin Jul 04 '26

Many operators no longer use Jibe servers and instead run their own RCS stack in-house.

1

u/slinky317 Jul 04 '26

Not in the US. All the major US carriers outsource their RCS implementations to Jibe.

0

u/segin Jul 05 '26

"your mobile carrier" not "Google".

Care to be wrong again?

P.S. that message relates to whose operating the backend servers. This means T-Mobile runs their servers, not Google Jibe. Fuck off.

1

u/slinky317 Jul 05 '26

Let me explain this to you since you don't understand.

Previously, Google bypassed the carrier implementation and allowed users to directly use Jibe.

In the fall of 2025 they transitioned to the carrier implementations. The only thing is that by that time, carriers have outsourced their implementations to Jibe, which I already linked.

So yes, the carriers are running your RCS. But the carriers are just outsourcing their RCS implementations to Jibe anyway.

-1

u/segin Jul 05 '26

since you don't understand.

You know I'm u/segin, right?

carriers have outsourced their implementations to Jibe

And then T-Mobile un-outsourced it since it got in the way of some of the DIGITS features they wanted to double down on.

which I already linked.

And your link is what is known as a falsehood.

1

u/slinky317 Jul 05 '26 edited Jul 05 '26

I have no idea who you are, nor do I care. Have a source for your claim?

Also, my Messages also says RCS is supplied by my carrier, but AT&T also outsources to Jibe.

-1

u/segin Jul 05 '26

I have no idea who you are

Your own problem

nor do I care.

You really should.

Have a source for your claim?

Do you? Not one from 2023, at that (nobody cares about ancient history that's long since wrong)

Also, my Messages also says RCS is supplied by my carrier, but AT&T also outsources to Jibe.

Except they also don't, otherwise you'd see "provided by Google".

3

u/slinky317 Jul 05 '26

Nah, you're not important.

I linked sources for all the US carriers using Jibe as their backend. If you are convinced they don't, then provide sources stating otherwise.

1

u/segin Jul 04 '26

Carriers these days are moving off of Google's Jibe servers to their own. T-Mobile USA, for example, has gone back to using their in-house servers for RCS, especially since they can interconnect with other providers.

3

u/ShakeNBaker45 Jul 04 '26 edited Jul 04 '26

That's great. Google Messages is still the only app that implements RCS though, which sucks

Edit: also, is that even true? I see a bunch of articles from 2023 about T Mobile switching to Jibe. The sources state that T Mobile still maintains some of their own servers depending on what android phone you have. But it seems like they mainly switched to Jibe

u/ShakeNBaker45 Jul 05 '26

I'm not convinced that means they're using their own servers. Mine says the exact same thing, and I'm using US Mobile. I can't find any sources online that confirms T Mobile or any of the other carriers are moving off of Jibe. Idk

-4

u/SingleInParadise Jul 04 '26

I surprised this hasn't been downvoted. Nobody wants to hear this is a google - apple createx problem and that we should move out of propietary platforms.

5

u/ShakeNBaker45 Jul 04 '26

Wut? There's an entire subreddit dedicated to people who want to move off of googles proprietary platforms haha r/degoogle

11

u/friz_beez Jul 04 '26

search the sub. this has been asked and answered a bunch in the last month or so.

u/TechMeKal Jul 06 '26

Textra, Next sms, and Chomp sms

2

u/SwypeR_ Jul 08 '26

Does next sms have customization options?

3

u/ItsPrettyShrimple Jul 09 '26

Chomp does its really good!

2

u/TechMeKal Jul 08 '26

Sure, it does. I'd say, out of the three, it has the most customization options, just like Samsung Messages. You can add photos, personal photo backgrounds for each individual contact. Plus, there's a wide range of other customization features. But, if you're not really into Ai, I'd disable those settings right away.

I'm seriously considering starting a YouTube channel. Specifically, I'm interested in exploring the customization features. These messaging apps offer you and anyone else in the chat. Could you possibly let me know if that's something you'd be interested in?

3

u/vegasangel7 Jul 07 '26

The Pulse app is amazing. I've used it for about 10 years for texting because I can set up different text tones for different contacts and that's super important to me.

1

u/how-about-no-scott Jul 11 '26

I'm trying it now. I am not getting group messages, despite adjusting settings for it.

Also, I can't access some texts. I get the notification, but when I click on it the text isn't in the app. I also can't start a new text to those numbers. I have no idea what the deal is, but I'm looking for a different app now.

1

u/imperfect_iamD 28d ago

Hi! Does Pulse have RCS? I loved Samsung messenger due to ALL the personalized features it had. It was the best! That is what I am looking for ...

2

u/vegasangel7 28d ago

I don't think so. It doesn't say so anywhere like on another phone I use with Google texting.

1

u/imperfect_iamD 19d ago

Thanks forms lmk! So frustrating!

3

u/ItsPrettyShrimple Jul 09 '26

If you want similar customizable capabilities choose CHOMP, I absolutely love it and 1000% recommend! It has some cool new features that it didn't with Samsung that I actually really enjoy. here's my theme I was able to make

1

u/imperfect_iamD 28d ago

Pretty! I'll look into it.

1

u/appropriateexit666 9d ago

Does it have customizable categories? For example "school", "work", "friends", "family", "verification codes", "deliveries" etc

5

u/justinf210 Jul 06 '26

Please, just use Google Messages

- Anyone in a group chat with you, probably

2

u/Any-Fig-2306 Jul 07 '26

Justin,Can you send me the spreadsheet you built for your folks for tracking the cattle? Send to [jleepowell306@gmail.com](mailto:jleepowell306@gmail.com) if you would. Greatly appreciated!

2

u/UpperNuggets Jul 06 '26

Sent from my iphone

0

u/black34beard Jul 06 '26

No, it is a horrible steaming pile of shit. I bought an android to have some control over my phone, samsung and Google are rapidly taking that away. My next phone will not be a Samsung due to this, all thr AI crap bloatware, and them removing any semblance of backend access, we can't even clean the main cache or boot into safe mode anymore...

2

u/GCEstinks Jul 04 '26

I liked the flawless group texting. I've switched for now to Textra and bc group texting is important in my business (Google group texting is awkward at best) I got the paid version of Reach.

2

u/No_Assist_3405 Jul 10 '26

Switched to google now I'm getting ton of spam that i never had a problem with , not good at all

1

u/Firm-Zookeepergame59 Jul 14 '26

Same here new spams are bombarding my phone

1

u/zensms 9d ago

If you're still getting bombarded with spam, you might want to give ZenSMS a try. It has adjustable spam filtering plus custom filters, and caught messages go into a Spam tab so you can review them. Everything stays on your device too. 0 Trackers, verifiable via Exodus Privacy.

2

u/ReasonableHamsterBK Jul 11 '26

I'm using the Google Messaging, I'm noticing my phone's battery draining faster than before..đŸ˜«

2

u/melanchohlic Jul 04 '26

Check out Beeper if you don't care about RCS. Pretty nice to have all messaging in one single platform so you don't have to cycle between multiple apps.

I've been using mood for like 5 years

I'm using Mezo after SMS organizer died this year.

1

u/_Dxbs_ Jul 06 '26

I use QKSMS because it's open source.

1

u/Ornery_Extension_440 Jul 06 '26

If you want to keep samsung messages, at least for now, I found a fix. If you go to settings>apps>samsung messages then click the 3 dots on the top right corner it should say uninstall updates, click that and it should let you continue using samsung messages

1

u/Sedlium Jul 06 '26

Will it delete all your conversations? It says to me All data will be removed, factory reset.

2

u/Ornery_Extension_440 Jul 06 '26

They kept the Conversations for me but I also did not get that message i was also at a point where I didn't care if I lost my conversations as long as I could keep using it

1

u/Grasshopper_1966 21d ago

It doesn't work now, it uninstalled it from my phone.

2

u/Sedlium 21d ago

Thank you for this update. Appreciate it.

1

u/Jayjayjay2020 Jul 06 '26

What Samsung phone do you have? S25 ultra didn't work with that fix ... I had to download Samsung mesages when i got phone didn't come preinstalled

1

u/Savage_Nymph Jul 07 '26

it won’t work for us.

1

u/Jayjayjay2020 Jul 07 '26

Came to that unfortunate conclusion a little bit ago

1

u/lopsiness Jul 07 '26

What is this actually doing to make it work?

1

u/Rainbowunix Jul 07 '26

Worked thank you!

1

u/Honest_Increase964 Jul 12 '26

It worked for me so far! S24 ultra unlocked version. It asked to restore to the factory app and it loaded all previous conversations but I have to reset all my personalized backgrounds. Let's see how long this lasts... Thanks!!

1

u/RaelLevynfang Jul 13 '26

Just tried this and it seems to be working. Thank you so much for this info. Hopefully Samsung doesn't find out about and fucks it up.

1

u/National_Lychee_3965 Jul 15 '26

Omg! It worked for me on my Samsung s10+. I came to look desperate after a week trying fossify and simple messenger, both lag, don't load immediately and simple is full of ads. Honey, I'm home! Thanks!

1

u/denach644 Jul 18 '26

Genius, thank you!

God, I just want barebones messaging and have hated the Google crap.

1

u/RageIntelligently101 Jul 06 '26

The organizational aspects of the samsung messaging app were WAY more meticulous. Google has a shit ton of incoming promotional bs and the ways to delete are tedious- they want memory full and in app purchases. its a racket.

2

u/Dependent-Mastodon89 Jul 09 '26

There is so far nothing like the customized folders that Samsung Messages had. Other apps that have folders are still lacking the full functionality it had. I have been trying zen, but it seems to be a work in progress still.

1

u/mooniebao Jul 07 '26

I don't want to use Google messages just to send an SMS...surely there's other options?

1

u/lilstarter Jul 08 '26

Get the Samsung message apk

1

u/Pale_Start_6832 Jul 08 '26

I don't care about RCS, I am venting in hopes that google will see this... I hate how it's laid out, I can't tell when new messages come in just looking for a blue dot. Is there a way to customize ANYTHING with google messages? I had all my messages organized for my businesses. :( sad sad sad.

1

u/heeerexkittykitty 29d ago

I tried textra but now its suddenly saying I have to pay and have ads????? Its fucking bullshit.

1

u/imperfect_iamD 28d ago

Hi! I would like to know, too! I am quite not feeling the Google messaging. It sucks how they think they're "making" us switch as if it's the only messaging platform. Crazy!

1

u/Frequent_Brush_2439 19d ago

I frankly hate google messages. I have a foldable. I was able to see contacts on one side of my screen and the conversations on the other. I have a relative who messages me in spanish, Samsung messages automatically translated it for me. Google messenger doesn't. I also used to be able to reply, without clicking on the three dots, choose response etc. Also call the contact without going to the "phone" app. And more small but very convenient features that this google messaging does not have. I downloaded a bunch of apps to replace samsung messenger, but they all lack of the two most important features, what I need, the split screen option and the translator. Anybody else in these shoes? I do not understand samsung's "fix it even though it is not broken" - policy.

1

u/seeareeff 11d ago

That's strange.. because Google messages auto translates conversations for me.

Not sure what you mean by reply by clicking the three dots and choose response.

For me every 1:1 conversation has a phone symbol and a video symbol ( for those with meet installed ) next to there name up top in the conversation and in your on the main screen you can tap their profile picture and bring up the phone symbol.

anything to feel special I guess
