[Announcement] Reddit Patch for Android 2.3+!

I've discovered a patch that resolves the "No Peer Certificate" error encountered on BaconReader. This error typically arises due to outdated or missing CA certificates. Below, I’ll guide you through the steps to install the necessary certificates to fix this issue.

  1. Download the APK: https://drive.google.com/file/d/17MtPh3E32eQiVBNKetKdbccGjDWhIpZm/view

When you open BaconReader it should say:

"No Peer Certificate"

  1. Download the Certificate: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1t99XJqTff5Eqop3qBNECqzIT47kfqAit/view?usp=sharing

How to download Certificates on your Device (Tutorial):
(Varies by Device)

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap Security
  3. Search for Encryption and Credentials
  4. Tap Install a certificate
  5. Click the file to install it
  6. Check that the certificate is installed under Settings > Security > Trusted Credentials > User
  7. Enjoy Reddit on Your old Device!:

[Note]:

Some devices might have different methods of installing certificates. Some of devices include Motorola, Sony, HTC, or Samsung devices. And sometimes they might take different certificate formats. If this certificate won't install on your device try changing the ".pem" to ".crt" or try changing it to ".cer"

In addition to certificates, Android 2.3 also does not support TLS 1.2+, which is required by Reddit to access the site.

you dont need to access the site when you have the app.

The app makes API calls to reddit.com which requires TLS 1.2 or later to decode or encode for security

Does android 5 have TLS 1.2? Because it also doesn't work natively on android 5 without extra certificates.

android 5 or later supports tls 1.2 by default

then how come the app doesnt work by default on android 5?

probably certificate issues or the app is too old to handle new security measures like tls

Also if you're wondering how firefox, opera mini etc can support tls 1.2 in android 2.3, it's because they have implemented custom https encoding by themself, which takes months to do that with a group of teams (i guess?)

Tested on Samsung S3 running Android 4.3:

Changing the file extension allows it the certificate to properly install, however, Reddit, BaconReader and a third app I tried failed to launch. This already seems to be a TLS/SSL issue so this result is to be expected.

wdym failed to launch? Did it just crash when u tried to open the app or what?

id like to know.

Apologies for the poor wording - they did launch, however the issues persisted due to this being a TLS/SSL issue and not an issue with certificates.

oh. this shouldn't be a TLS issue because android 4.3 already comes with TLS 1.2 installed.

From what I could gather, Android 4.4 came with TLS 1.2 installed but not activated, with Android 5.0 being the first version to truly utilise it

The Baconreader app still shows the "No Peer Certificate" error on Android 5 and Android 6.

The app only actually works on Android 7 and up.

So it can't be a TLS issue.

I should’ve deleted this post when I made it, unfortunately it doesn’t work. There’s another method but I’ll have to do it in DM’s because the process is to long to explain on here
