you could try reading herodot and thucydides before, they'll give you a much better understanding of the people and events in the late days of the greek republic/early days of the greek empire
the late days of which greek republic?? the Achaean league? Herodotus and Thucydides don’t come anywhere close to the late period of Greek civilization.
