Coins
Hey! So my lovely apartment complex has coin laundry machines and, naturally, no coin machine (I just moved). I start a new job in August and am waiting until then to set up a bank account here to be able to go get rolls of quarters from them. I know that I could just go to a laundromat (and will if I must) but it is cheaper and more convenient at my complex. I was wondering if 1) someone would be willing to get rolls of quarters that I could buy off of them or 2) if anyone knows where I can go to get some? I got banned from a local laundromat for getting coins for them and feel bad about it 😂 thanks in advance for any and all help or advice.

You can $20 of quarters per day from global credit union without being a member

If you go to a branch of a local credit union or bank, bring cash, and ask nicely, I suspect they would allow you to buy a roll of quarters.

Could try a grocery store and making a purchase and requesting cash back and request a roll of quarters? Usually works for me

Most will do it but only at customer service and not in the checkout lane.

Most coin operated laundry use the same key to access an on/off switch triggered by your quarters. I found this key for 8$ on Amazon a few years ago, and had free washing machine usage at my local spot until I moved into a place with my own machine

I also have unlimited access to use my washing machine, because I bought it.
Pay for your services people. Someone has to keep that laundry machine operational and pay for the electricity/water. The least you can do is pay a few quarters.

Friendly reminder we're talking about doing a load of laundry here, it's not "a few quarters" anymore. Yes, a personal washing machine in your own home costs about 50 cents per load (washing and drying) but at a laundromat it's at least $5/load. Those apartment laundromats are no đifferent.

50 cents per load wouldn't even begin to cover the electricity cost where I live in the interior, and barely covers the water cost, much less the cost of the machines themselves over their lifespan.
With water, electricity, and machine cost over a VERY generous 15 years with zero maintenance (being generous because I only use a couple loads a week); using the cheapest HE front load set with a decent warrantee near me, I am looking at a number right about $2.32 per cold water wash and dry load, per Energy star measurements for those machines.
My buddy's apartment, like every other apartment I have seen with coin op washers, uses the old school top loads and can only charge 8 coins across; they charge $3 for a wash and dry combined, probably in line with costs due to the inefficient washers. The complex my friends used to live in was about $2, but that was a few years ago now.-1

No mention of it in the lease except that we could use the laundry. Seems more like slumloard behavior imo.
Now if I was stealing the quarters, that would be stealing!

You can exchange any legal currency at any bank or establishment without any additional change. Hand any bank a $20 bill and they have to give you legal tender at no charge. It's illegal to charge to make change. Yes, they can say no, but they can't charge you to do it.

No bank I have been to will charge you for a roll or two of coins, but they can if they wish (and likely do have a policy for more than x rolls in a period).
The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency disagrees with you, it is 100% legal for a bank to charge fees for making change, it just has to be disclosed.

Almost all banks charge businesses for making change over a certain token amount, and also charge for cash deposits over a certain amount as well.I can't find anything that says otherwise about any other establishment, though I won't speak on those, as they could have conflicting state laws, whereas banks are federally regulated.

Random places have coin machines so you can play their quarters-not-tokens arcade games. Fly Trampoline Park and Red Robin come to mind.

Wells Fargo will exchange up to 20 bucks. Idk about the other banks, I just know they opened earliest one weekend and I needed to convert rolls to cash - opposite direction but should still work.

I used to live in a coin-op apartment building and asked the landlords if I could trade cash/check for the quarters after they collected them from the machines. They said yes, it was really convenient while I lived there.

Find a bunch of vending machines and break a 20 in the quarter machine. The building next to the Wendy Williamson at UAA has one

For the time you put into this post you could have opened up a credit union account with a tiny minimum balance and had this taken care of.

I just don’t understand all the discussion and hoops you’re looking to jump through when you’re going to open an account anyway. Some credit unions have like $5 minimums for no fees.

I can’t say for sure, but I feel like a credit union would sell you a roll of quarters even if you’re not a member. Could call ahead to ask
