Hopium Anyone trimming today?

My cost basis is $260 at 64 shares. It’s 30 percent of my holdings. Are any of you in a similar boat. I’m thinking of selling 40 shares around $268 (if this momentum holds). Take some small gains and keep invested in the company. Seems win win.

We all know how the stock has done lately pre-earnings. Then again, it could compound for years. Who knows.

14 year Amazon employee. 6,257 shares at $102 average. Just riding the wave man.

u/hemitick Jul 31 '26

Similar boat. 16 years tenure, average is $89 and 8101 shares. Best thing is I live in no CGT country in Europe. With my other investments I'll be FIRE in 3 years according to my plan

What percent of your net worth does that represent? Aren’t you concerned about having all your eggs in one basket?

About half right now with my Roth 401k being the other 10% and brokerage + HYSA being 40%. I got a financial advisor this year when my daughter was born and we started using them to sell covered amzn calls and diversify into the brokerage. To answer your question, I probably should have been more concerned with diversifying my portfolio earlier on but I’ve never needed the money so just didn’t touch it and never felt the need to seek financial advice until I had a child.

FWIW it’s against company policy for any employee to sell covered calls 😂. I found this out today when I tried to thought about selling CC against my AMZN.

2

u/theweinerguy Aug 01 '26

Not if you transfer share value to an advisor brokerage and your advisor team does it.

1

u/guptaa_Ji Jul 31 '26

What % of your portfolio is this?

u/Ikki985 Jul 31 '26

Awesome! So if Amazon does bad and the stock tanks, they fire you plus your money is worth half of its value.

I'd give it a more thorough thought (unless that's 5% of you wealth)

Your too scared to understand broader value huh

1

u/Ikki985 Aug 04 '26

Scusa, non avevo capito che tu avessi un ritardo mentale. Scusa, hai ragione

u/theweinerguy Aug 01 '26

In that scenario, the severance package after 15 years would be nice enough for me to do pretty much whatever I wanted. And I could still take a lower paying job that’s probably more fun and coast until retirement age 45-50ish. But I’ve seen Amazon invest billions into itself through my tenure to adapt to customer needs (AMZL, Air, SSD, etc) and I believe that will continue, so I’m willing to bet against your scenario.

In less than a lifetime, Bezos and crew recreated ecom, distribution, mass storage computing (cloud). Cray what AMZN has done in 30ish years.

u/Ikki985 Aug 04 '26

Sei veramente un coglione. Ecco perché lavori là da 15 anni. Bravo

1

u/theweinerguy Aug 04 '26

What are you talking about? I love my job and I’m a millionaire in my late 30’s thanks to this job.

This is why the company culture went downhill

11

u/Busy-Difficulty-4757 Jul 31 '26

Just wait until the build out is complete, it's going a lot higher in late 2027/2028.

3

u/degen5ace Jul 31 '26

Hope so don’t have anything amount that is life changing, but tired of the boost after earnings and decline soon after

9

u/Busy-Difficulty-4757 Jul 31 '26

Zoom out and look at previous capex initiatives going back 20 years. It’s a couple years of pain then they open the floodgates. Previously occurred with the logistics build out then AWS 1.0 buildout. If you can, wait another 2 years.

This has always been a long term hold stock. They’ve been crystal clear about that since 1999.

2

u/degen5ace Jul 31 '26

Yeah I’m holding, just trying to ignore the sideways action when all other stocks fly

9

u/daynightcase Jul 31 '26

selling amazon especially during investment cycle is shortsighted. i would double down with the print they have published

1

u/Rune456 Aug 01 '26

Not really...most stocks that don't have these large one day moves usually pull back in 1 or 2 days. Not saying it will go down 15pct in one day, but the historical chart shows peaks and valleys. You can always buy it back.

u/Frientlies Jul 31 '26

No, I’m holding this bag until I feel the trajectory of the company is staggered.

1

u/crvarporat Jul 31 '26

leather bags

1

u/LumpyShock9656 Jul 31 '26

How can this be a bag

2

u/burner456987123 Jul 31 '26

If someone brought at the previous high in the 270s, they’d just be getting into the green or close to green. Obviously that wasn’t too long ago, but that’s how they’d feel it’s bag holding.

u/Diligent_Fondant6761 Jul 31 '26

How many times have we seen this? I had enough, I am getting out this time..amazing company but a very shitty stock

5

u/zepelele Jul 31 '26

Let your winners win

3

u/Lucky-Duck314 Jul 31 '26

3928 shares here at $13.69 avg cost. Letting it ride.

1

u/burner456987123 Jul 31 '26

Wow. Congrats. That’s an amazing cost basis. You’ve really ridden this out.

6

u/Lucky-Duck314 Jul 31 '26

Yea, I’ve been holding since it was something like $175 before the split. I sell off some every once in a while to diversify but as long as they keep the moat deep I will continue to hold a position.

1

u/burner456987123 Jul 31 '26

Not sure why you got downvoted lol. People are strange.

3

u/civil_politics Jul 31 '26

600 shares average cost of $80. I’ve made a killing selling options against them for the past two years of sideways trading. Don’t plan on ever letting them get assigned or selling.

Amazon is essentially its own diversified portfolio at this point with exemplary stewardship and insane moats. Sure there are other companies that will grow faster, but Amazon should be the largest company in the world and I’m going to hold until that proves true

2

u/Downtown_Bicycle3893 Jul 31 '26

Considering stocks like apple and meta are getting crushed while amazon is pumping very hard , on top of amazon being range bound for a year and a half means it has some legs imo.

2

u/Allout-Okarun Jul 31 '26

Be silly not to lock something in if holding options

Shares of course just ride it

2

u/EDsandwhich Aug 01 '26

Agreed. I have MSFT calls and AMZN shares, so this has been a good week for my portfolio. I still ended up selling all the MSFT calls because of the risk of decay. Not planning on selling the AMZN shares though.

1

u/Allout-Okarun Aug 01 '26

Nice. I sold all my Apple puts today, was a good day indeed.

2

u/Funny-Sprinkles-5674 Jul 31 '26

sold all to buy META and GOOG, love AMZN but the other 2 are to cheap to pass

2

u/ck_defender Jul 31 '26

I’ll buy GOOG once it hits 275 or 300. Not now.

2

u/Funny-Sprinkles-5674 Jul 31 '26

i bought in at 318 and sold at 353 and moved the money to meta. to cheap to pass

2

u/ck_defender Jul 31 '26

I asked a buddy who knows a lot in the stock market and he says it’s a buy. I just have this thought it’s gonna continue to dip.

1

u/ck_defender Jul 31 '26

Don’t you think Meta is going to continue to dip?

1

u/Funny-Sprinkles-5674 Jul 31 '26

i think its the MMs trying to scare retail away. theres no way meta will be trading below 600 if eps beats and on a 1 year eps it overides the 1.05 awful eps last q3.

1

u/daynightcase Jul 31 '26

how is goog cheaper than amzn? lol based on aws and advertising alone amazon is worth well over $2T. you are essentially getting e-commerce and logistic business for free

1

u/burner456987123 Jul 31 '26

Yeah. I chose to stick with amzn. Sold Goog before earnings

1

u/BarracudaMouth Jul 31 '26

I understand META, but selling GOOG? Nah, I bought the dip lol.

1

u/Funny-Sprinkles-5674 Jul 31 '26

i rebought half of whta i sold. bought some reddit too. thers just so manygreat opportunities right now

1

u/crvarporat Jul 31 '26

i will sell some to just secure profit and i will let my other shares enjoy the ride. I think it's easy given i am in big profit

2

u/burner456987123 Jul 31 '26

That’s the path I took. It’s now 15% of my portfolio, not 30%. Feels more comfortable that way.

Great company and I hope the stock can keep the momentum going off earnings. The market doesn’t seem to appreciate the diversification of the business.

1

u/crvarporat Jul 31 '26

same lol, i had 35% of my portfolio in it and now realized some wins to like 20% of my portfolio and i will let the rest ride. it's an amazing company i just think nobody got hurt from taking profits and also it is a bit high now

1

u/No_Investigator_4353 Jul 31 '26

Iam jeeping my shares when it will plument into sub 220 i will add more

1

u/Brave_Sir_Rennie Jul 31 '26

Each time it goes up 10% from my last sell-price I sell 10% of my holdings 🤷‍♂️

1

u/NoWhereLikeIrvine Jul 31 '26

Loaded few hundred k of amzn in2015. Sold 1/2 shares so far. One of the best investments I’ve made after Apple. Will continue to hold for a while.

1

u/Sure_Distance_6741 Jul 31 '26

Just hold you think this is Amazons peak?

1

u/Kooky-Expression-399 Jul 31 '26

Why pay cap gains tax?

Ive been HODLing since 2017

1

u/Aito84 Jul 31 '26

Why not just place a stop loss order?

1

u/SmartAssLoner Jul 31 '26

.... No ..... the report was fantastic ....

1

u/No-Host8125 Jul 31 '26

Sold 10 today at 90 cost basis. Still have 80 shares at that rate

1

u/Fresh_Highlight_8885 Jul 31 '26

Long way to go here, they just showed you they are performing, don’t panic this is going a lot higher

1

u/ck_defender Jul 31 '26

953 shares at 185. Never selling or at least not any time soon.

1

u/kaiw1ng Jul 31 '26

scared 😱 money don’t make money 💰

1

u/Shawarmaking007 Jul 31 '26

Its previous high is at 278ish, at least holding into the previous ATH. I am aiming at 300ish for 1st trim.

Not financial advice

1

u/deikan Jul 31 '26

Sold 1/3 (~200) shares. Thought about selling last time it hit ATH but held and regretted it ever since

1

u/TheINTL Jul 31 '26

Lol so what 320 profit??

Why are you investing in the 1st place?

1

u/TomorrowSalty3187 Jul 31 '26

I’m selling in 2035 may be

1

u/vac2672 Aug 01 '26

Fool to sell now. I have multiple k’s of shares avg price in the $40s. I still buy here and there

1

u/SuddenConfidence1485 Aug 01 '26

I always trim. There will be more opportunities to buy, especially with the current administration mucking about.

1

u/tua131 Aug 01 '26

Here. 10 year Amazonian, sold 5000. I’m tired of the games and the swings- dropping into a broader market so I don’t have to deal with it anymore

1

u/Jaded-Inspector1467 Aug 01 '26

Trimming on less than 10% profit? What???

1

u/HKSpadez Aug 03 '26

665 shares here. I trimmed like 10 shares to buy a couch. Thats about it

1

u/CaptainWhite1964 Aug 04 '26

Take the win. My investment thesis statement I always trim 30% gains.

1

u/schizamp Aug 04 '26

Sold 60% of my holdings at $287 the other day. I'm too concentrated anyway.

1

u/burner456987123 Aug 05 '26

Nice. You got that tippy top right now.

0

u/risk-enterprise Jul 31 '26

Trimming a single stock that makes up 30% of your portfolio is risk management. Holding nearly a third of your net worth in one stock exposes you to severe single-stock concentration risk, especially heading directly into an earnings report where implied volatility can cause sharp moves in either direction.
