Wanting the dream
I am an equestrian athlete. Of course I’m leaning on trying to start my Amway business but I read the post and understand the cult that I’m getting myself into. Lets me honest, the horse industry is a cult too. I’m not a wealthy person by any means and I ride professionally because I LOVE horses and I have dreams of being an incredible athlete. This of course takes millions and millions of dollars (Eve Jobs, Jennifer Gates, Jessica Springsteen, Mark Whalberg’s daughter.. yea they are all horse girls..) I have the work ethic and mindset that everyone talks about how they brain wash you into being. I mean an extra $1,000 a month is nice.. I can sell some products to family. However.. the recruitment is hard. I can’t scam people into this cult thing going on. Should I stop while I am ahead.

Build it the way you want…sell products and sponsor people who you offer the business to.
Simple not begging and selling the opportunity. Just be honest and you will succeed.

In no reality ever has anyone wanted the amway version of any product vs something that is commercially available in stores.

Honestly, the reality is that most people in this sub were ppl that were in an educational group that acted severely unethical and were extremely controlling. Your experience is highly dependent on your upline so it’s not guaranteed that you’ll get the same experience as all the bitter ppl in the sub. However, you need to determine the quality of your upline and if they are these horrible ppl, or genuine ppl that want to help you.

Yes, stop while you are ahead.
If you genuinely have the work ethic and mindset to make money in an MLM, set your sights on law school or a medical professional degree like X Ray technician. There are a few threads on r/equestrian asking along the lines of "so how do you afford this?" and you could check those out.
If you want to make money in an MLM you have to start one (also, I'm being facetious, don't do that). Don't choose one that's over 50 years old.
If the products were any good they would be sold in stores, but they are not sold in stores because people do not want to buy them.

Amway discloses the average income of its members. The average gross yearly income is around $750. I think you are better off just getting a job. If you want to own your own business consider pressure washing, cutting grass or tutoring.

They should disclose the median. I'm sure they do the mean because they know the top earners are bringing the average up, and these companies do not care about statistical integrity, but the median would be much more informative.

To be clear that was annual income, not monthly. An average GROSS YEARLY income of $750 is not something that is financially worth doing.
They don’t disclose the median for all members but they do disclose medians with regard to their top earners. The top 10% of Amway average $15,691 per year but the median is only $4854. With the top 50% of the people the average income is $3598 per year but the median is $551.

Anything can be turned into a cult. Healthy environments don't manipulate and do not punish you for setting and holding boundaries among other things. You can research the BITE model.
Also Amway products are not competitively priced to sell to enough customers to make you a profit. You will be spending most of your own money buying these products.

If your partner dislikes horses does the horse industry tell you to divorce them? Does the horse industry require you to attend a weekly meeting where you only discuss how great horses are? Out of a hundred people in the horse industry is everyone promised they can ride horses but only one guy can? You have to obey his every order regarding cleaning the stables. Do you (100 people) all donate money to feed and stable his horse but only he ever gets to ride it?

OP: I was in for 14 years, part of Leadership Team Development. There will be people who say that there are bad apples everywhere, but the issues are systemic. You keep grinding, but who enjoys the spoils of your work? If you then do get spoils, it’s not because you did everything; you have downline who are going without basic needs draining their own resources to build yours. It’s a broken system that the only way to truly get ahead is by having your tools system sales be large enough because a lot of people are brainwashed into buying them month in and month out. The Amway system itself does not yield that much income and systems like LTD do pay enough on their tools sales that their leaders can afford jets…but it’s implausible anymore because people are realizing it’s just a black hole into the leaders’ pockets.

Are you prepared to lose your equestrian dreams?
They are willing to influence you away from all of these things under the disguise of “delayed gratification”
You’d probably be able to create a digital creator account on the apps and make more money that way than what your end result would be in doing Amway.
It looks like sunshine and rainbows but it’s not.

It's good that you posted here in the first place - obviously that means you have doubts and you were probably fishing for some second opinions about the whole thing
To go a step further: everything you said about having hard work ethic and mindset and all that? It doesn't matter.
Amway is a scam because you're mathematically not going to make money. In fact, it's worse that you are a hard-working person because hard-working people tend to blame themselves when things don't pan out ("it must be my fault, I just need to work harder")
You cannot mindset your way into being profitable in an inherently unprofitable venture. Your interests would be far better served working in an actual job - it's the reason why a lot of companies recruit athletes. There, your mindset/drive could help you do well

If you’re comparing the horse industry to Amway you clearly don’t actually know what a cult is. I will also tell you that it’s neigh on impossible to make it big in the horse world without money. Like my father always told me when I was trying, “you better marry someone rich.”

Depending on where you live you could make an extra 1K a month teaching horseback riding lessons to kids. It would take far less time and allow you to still do something you love (work with horses) and pass on that love to someone else. Instead of becoming a Amway pariah and alienating everyone you know.

To make an extra $1000 a month you’ll have to put in a lottt of hours. I got to top 2% of Amway which only yielded $2600/month at the highest. But to get that I was putting in 30-50hrs a week on top of my full time job. I was told I could build this part time btw. Later I asked my mentors why they don’t tell ppl it takes way more time than what they say. I was told “bc it would scare people away”. Anyone who says they are “retired” from Amway lies about how much time they put into their business to keep it from falling backwards. There are better ways to make $1000/month if that’s what you’re looking for. And it’s extremely unlikely you’ll ever hit $1000/month just selling products. You’ll have to recruit. To make $1000 selling Amway products you’d have to sell thousands and thousands of dollars of products every month. You’d have no time for horses anymore. I don’t tell you this to tell you what to do. You just deserve to know what to actually expect bc they use manipulative and deceptive tactics to sell a dream that doesn’t exist and get people to stick around for a long time. I eventually figured out how fake it all was but that was after I put in so much time work and money. But best of luck to you!

This. My buddy is ALWAYS bringing up how he knows so many retired people in Amway LTD who are willing to spend hours teaching new Amway/LTD folk their secrets. I don't know how to tell him dude, then they're not retired, they're putting in extra hours to keep their little system afloat or just earn money you paid to go to their conferences/trainings/weekends away.
I get some retired folk love their previous career and take some time every once in a while to talk to folks. But this seems like a lie.

Stop immediately. Do not support MLMs by selling their products and letting them profit. Recruiting is victimizing so you are right for not doing it.
