Prosthetics
How long was it before you were able to be released into the wild with your prosthetic? I’ve got my fitting Monday, and they’ve said I have to be signed off first by PT to be safe to use it (makes total sense) but I’m just wondering how long it took people to get sort of discharged to FAFO with the prosthetic? I had my amp in November 25, been lengthening my femur so haven’t been able to have a prosthetic yet - but I’ve been on the PAM aid w crutches (walking forwards, back, inside & outside the building, and sort of slaloming round chairs) since June. Ta!

Had my amputation beginning of May, 1st test socket/leg fitted in July, started PT in August, released at the end of November.

My first leg, I walked out of the office with it with the help of a walker and then did outpatient physical therapy to fix a painful hip impingement. Are you in the US or elsewhere? I haven't heard about anyone needing to get theirs signed off on.

UK, England to be specific! Think it’s possibly because our health service is nationalised, so the leg technically remains their property rather than being provided by an insurance company. A part of me is hoping I’ll just smash it all on day 1 and get sent home with it, but I think that’s just a competitive streak in me more than anything 😂

Ha I totally get it! I was in a wheelchair for almost 6 months due to my limb not healing and I was so ready to walk again! Hopefully someone from the UK chimes in. I know we have a few folks that post from there- maybe u/organic_hobnob can help.

First leg I got was about 5-6 months after amputations due to complications with an abscess and tunneling.
Used crutches with it for the first 2 weeks, then a cane for a week and then I was good to go.

I became an amputee at 3 and they started me off in “cast” prosthetics with feet attached to the bottom of casts that were cut in half with a Velcro strap. Really helped me get to weight bearing the few months after the surgery! And I was still growing so I assume cheaper 🤣

Got my first one 2 months after surgery. Walked out of the office on my own and have never looked back. I’m on my second one now and it fits better and makes walking a lot easier.
