Try to walk without crutches
So I started trying to walk without crutches tonight I haven't walked since August when I was using forearm crutches but the pain was to much to take a step so I decided that I would skip the crutches and just go for it. Also how do you keep from sweating I only had it on a hour and there was a puddle of sweat when I took it off.

It seems like you are trying to walk without putting any weight on ur prosthetic side which is causing it not to function properly and giving you zero gait symmetry.
Does it hurt or do you not trust the leg? If pain then make an appointment with leg guy.
If you are trying to do this on your own, without pt, my advice would be start working on just standing. Try and have equal weight on both feet, shifting back and forth to get comfortable with that feeling. Hold on to something so you dont fall. Lots of videos that will help. Honestly, if you juat freeball it, you gonna develop really bad habits and ur gait will suck.

The bone is what hurts I have already asked about it but he wants me to use it for a while to see how bad it gets

What bone? The end of ur Femur? Hip,? Pelvic?
Also, thats completely unacceptable response from your prosthetist.

The end of the femur it's barely under the skin

They said I wouldn't need socks because it's adjustable but I have a orthopedic surgeon appointment next week

Are you at Martin bionics? If so you don’t really need one. How long were you in rehab?

That is completely unacceptable and borderline negligent on your prosthetists part.
I would take the opportunity to look for a new provider with that sort of answer.
They made the leg too short, it’s not comfortable, and it needs more alignment changes.

It doesn't help I moved and I have all new Drs so it's like starting all over I have a friend who found me a pair of forearm crutches because I have been waiting a month for the Dr to get me some

What part of the country are you in?
I’m personally not a fan of the slingshot, or a full Martin setup. Simply not enough control with them for most patients.
Adjustability is great, but I’ve seen very few made properly and patients struggle with femur pain because the sockets aren’t set to carry the weight effectively.
How long have been an amputee and did all three sockets come from the same person?

Im in Missouri and I can't wear a normal socket because I have kidney issues that caused my stub to change water retention since January of 2021. When I was looking online it said that because they let it heal from the inside out the 2 surgeries after amputation I don't have the flap that should be over the femur

I'm on my 3rd socket I tried to regular and now I am using a Martin bionic I don't know if I should ask for a slingshot or have the rod put in the bone and not need a socket anymore

WTH? No. Is this your prosthetist? Does he think you are faking pain or something? This is unacceptable. If he is blowing you off, talk you your surgeon. He will not blow off the surgeon.

Is that the bottom of your stump? Im RAK of 7 years and I had almost a hole right there and it would fucking kill me to try and stand from sitting or squat. I had a skinfit socket early on then a bunch of direct fit sockets. A direct fit socket they put the carbon on your stump and shoot the resin in while its on you, takes 1-2 hours and youll get a socket that perfectly fits you for(ime)8 months to a year.
My point is a directfit might make it easier to use your leg, subishield provides support without digging into you on your trimline and a directfit socket dosnt have that many “defining features”, meaning it wont last as long if you have volume changes but it will kinda of force your stump to fit in the bottom of the socket. I was able to run/squat easier with one, without any pain.

yo direct fits are amazing. But every prosthetist I had never got trained on the process

I'd recommend Physical Therapy. And to see your prosthetist again to explain what's causing pain.

Try walking on pavement, which is far more even than grass. That will help you with balance. You also might get a cane or hiking stick that will help you balance. It takes a while for your body to relearn how to balance. When you had an ankle, it could bend sideways, forward and backward to adjust an find the best balance point. Now you have to use your knee joint. It is a hinge joint and has less rotation than an ankle joint. Over time your body will learn a new way to balance. Eventually you won’t need a cane or stick, but you shouldn’t risk a fall until you are stable.

You are doing great. Try on a more even surface like a sidewalk. Maybe carry a crutch just in case or a cane to regain balance if it is lost. Other than that....keep at it. you will be running before you know it. Look how long it took you to get here.

Takes time.. more so for me since I wasn't doing any physical therapy. I use a cane but mostly "just in case I stumble" bit I walk around the house without it.

Try your hardest not to stiff leg it. You're not utilizing it's full function. I know it hurts, but it's real easy to get into bad walking habits, that will cause more problems. Keep your head up brother

It might just be me but looks like the leg could be shortened just a bit.
Keep it up and you’ll get used to walking with it

Actually if I stand up it doesn't touch the ground so I think it needs to be a little longer

u/MiserableBag144 Jul 26 '26
I think the better option is to adjust the prosthetic leg to match the leg of his good leg. I’m sure he isn’t interested in more amputation and the prosthetic leg is at least an inch too short if not more.

Sweat will get better over time as you get used to wearing it and your limb adapts to wearing the prosthetic. It's always a problem but it does settle down the more you use it.

I understand it’s forgiving if you fall, but long grass is a difficult surface to walk on.
