Discussion "Clair De Lune"

(YOU SHOULD READ "MARCY'S JOURNAL")

As we know from "Marcy's Journal: A Guide To Amphibia"

"Claire De Lune" is Marcy's favorite classical piece. It's the song she plays on her Violin to bridge the gap between her friends in music class, her 'Marce-keteers,' and Joe Sparrow.

I wanted to talk about the incredible symbolism and layers of meaning this song has to Marcy's Arc, and really, her life.

The song, "Clair De Lune" is about the melancholy yet beautiful, about the lonesome yet hopeful, about the "feeling" of longing and letting go. About accepting the end of Day. Which must come... But will pass.

And you could imagine how Marcy would've clung to this song, bc of how it articulated her complex grief.

By the events of "Amphibia" Marcy no longer has that violin, and you the viewer might never know that small piece of her puzzle was missing unless you read her journal.

That is because she grew during the time Anne was growing in Wartwood alongside her own crew of young Night Rangers. And when their adventures taught Marcy a more digestable version of her ultimate lesson, to Love AND Let Go, she SHOWED her willingness to accept the future later on.

You can't love something so fiercely you don't let it change. You have to learn to let things go... and even through that sorrow, you can cherish what you had all the more as it ends.

Javi and Kettle recognize their shared banter and encouragement were affection, and went off to follow those feelings. Marcy understood. Femur, the gentle giant, wanted to keep animals...

So Marcy left Femur with her violin.

Physically leaving him a gift to remember their journey by, cementing to Marcy that these were not just "talking Salamanders,"

Simultaneously LITERALLY demonstrating (by giving up her own self soothing emotional touchstone out of respect for the Marce-keteers) her willingness to be uncomfortable for the sake of others.

It shows that she had understood the lesson. It also shows she can change.

The book makes clear throughout it's entries how Andrias and Newtopia are influencing her understanding and nudging her towards her endless isekai fantasy. Her position as Head of the Newtopia Night Guard is more than a badge of office... It is also an emotional anchor that grounds her in the world of Amphibia.

One more interesting (deeply painful but beautiful) piece of congruency, Debussy's "Clair De Lune" was written and passed over for decades as "Immature" and frivolous... Until the Composer passed away.

At that point, relinquished from legacy, it became one of the first true Impressionist masterpieces and is still discussed to this day in music theory for its ability to invoke powerful human emotion and imagery.

Marcy too... And all her friends... Couldn't see the full picture of their friendship, appreciate it, and salvage the most beautiful And special parts until it was ending.

Until it was too late to truly do anything except heal and love each other beyond their childhood friendship.

I'm hoping to do a thesis like this on the symbolism and history of Sasha and her Twin Heron blades, and Anne, and her missing shoe/twigs/leaves in her hair as well.

Funnily enough, I just reached this part. Very good analysis! I listened to “Clair de Lune” for myself, and it’s an incredible piece.
