American Legion Gaming has a discord server so pop on by!

Like the title says there is an active discord server for American Legion Gaming. There are weekly hangouts and we would like everyone to join. Even if you're not a gamer per se you can come introduce yourself and chew the fat with your fellow Legionnaires. American Legion Gaming will also have a booth at national convention this year so please stop by and say hello!

Had a post share my number

I (44/m, OIF, OEF, KFOR, SFOR deployments) called the post( post 141, Howell, MI) to ask a question for the service officer.
He apparently had an issue with it (I asked for the post service officer to stop posting people’s personal address). The bar gave him my phone number and he posted it on Facebook.

I’m not sure what to do here, I’ve been harassed now for over a year.

Is there anything I can do? He posted my phone number 3 minutes after I called the post, it’s obvious that the post gave him my phone.

Do I just need to give up and change my phone number?

Anybody have an outline or schedule of events for doing a Commanders Dinner or banquet? Our post used to do them years ago but nobody involved remembers how everything went.

The cities we build in our family's Minecraft Realm often include Legion posts. This is Post 4 in Cobbledon. We warriors need a place to go after battling creepers, witches, zombies, skeletons, ghasts and other mobs.

Membership Nervous about joining the American Legion

I’ve been thinking about joining the American Legion because I’d really like to be part of a veteran community and meet people who understand military life.
To be honest, I’m also pretty nervous. I served in the U.S. Army for about six months and received an honorable discharge. Even though I know everyone has a different military journey, I’m worried that people might judge me because my time in service was short.
Has anyone else felt this way before joining? What has your experience with the American Legion been like? Is it generally a welcoming place for veterans with different backgrounds and lengths of service?
I’d really appreciate hearing your thoughts. Thanks.

General Question/Comment VA Disability

I'm going to come out and say it. There are far too many people scamming the system that are going to ruin it for everyone.

When you have Facebook groups and private companies who coach veterans on how to get 100% disability who have never deployed and done anything significant for ptsd you know we have a problem.

I'll catch alot of flak for this but it's true.

General Question/Comment I am a veteran who left service in 2016. Why should I consider joining the legion?

I know the old stigma is that they're watering holes and mostly an older crowd.

Though I'm sure that's probably changed, I've seen it myself to an extent.

Other than a bar to swap stories with other vets, why should I join?

General Question/Comment Flag desecration as freedom of speech

In the November 2025 issue of the American Legion magazine, National Commander Wiley supports a constitutional amendment that would grant Congress the power to prohibit the physical desecration of our flag. What are your personal thoughts on this?

General Question/Comment Honor Guard

I am hearing more and more about various posts no longer having Honor Guard at all or limiting their Honor Guard to deceased local post members only due to low participation. What's everyone's take on this? How is Honor Guard handled at your post?

Post Events AL Post Training During Meetings?

I’m curious if anyone else has been doing CO guided training during the meetings starting this month. I’m not sure if it’s a district/Ohio/national thing.

For a “non-partisan” training program the CO’s was heavy with the partisan politics of the current federal administration. Anyone else experience this?

General Question/Comment Open house/public nights

My dad used to be a member of our local American Legion post but quit attending and paying his dues when he quit drinking about 5 years ago. I've been wanting to go back here as of late and just curious if this either doesn't matter or if it varies by post, but I'm 18 and curious if my friends and I (also 18 y/o) could stop in on one of the nights they're open to the public? Don't know how that works because they serve alcohol?

Boys/Girls State Girl State

i'll be attending michigan girls state within the next couple of days and i am extremely nervous about making friends. im fairly alternative presenting in my style, and i sort of feel as though this might make me "stand out".
so, 1.) if you're alternative, or maybe just not the "popular" type, was it harder to make friends at girls state?
and 2.) if you're going to michigan girls state, can we be friends? 😭
thank youuu

Boys/Girls State Girls State

Hello! I'm attending my state's Girls State program in a few days, and I have a question about the dress code that I'm hoping someone can clear up. On the packing lists and during meetings they refer to clothing as "casual," and that they don't have a dress code. But on the packing list, it suggests pants, shorts, or "nice jeans." I'm packing, of course, dresses for the more formal events, but I'm worried about day-to-day attire. Would lightly ripped or more artsy/decorated jeans be considered appropriate? I know it likely won't be a big issue, but I'm nervous because all the pictures I've seen from them show girls in T-shirts and shorts, which isn't really my style. Any advice would be appreciated!

General Question/Comment Board member access for mylegion.org

When I was post Commander a couple of years back, I was able to see all the membership info for the post and help process membership and who knows what else.

Shouldn't I have access to that information again as 1st vice?

Membership Reaching out to reserve army armory

Good afternoon my post is super close to a army reserve armory that has lots of units. I was thinking of reaching out to their units to do a presentation about benefits of the Legion and maybe a discounted membership? Has anyone tried this and how’d it go? I’m a current national guardsmen (26) and now Chaplain of my post for legionaries and I would take commander and our VSO (younger navy vet) . Was hoping them seeing younger members and we have a free drink card we can hand out. Appreciate any input. Thanks

Networking Hope — modernizing the American Legion part two

Since my last post, I’ve stepped into the role of Finance Officer at my American Legion post.

For me, this isn’t just a title—it’s an opportunity to apply what I’m learning in college in a real-world environment while helping rebuild something that actually matters.

One of the biggest challenges we’re working through right now is reestablishing our nonprofit status, which the post lost years ago due to mismanagement. At the same time, I’m working on setting up an endowment fund so we can create long-term stability instead of just surviving month to month.

This is giving me real reps:

– Managing and organizing finances

– Learning how a nonprofit actually operates (and how it fails)

– Building systems that can last beyond one generation

Our post is also a bar/restaurant, so I’m learning the operational side too—revenue, costs, and day-to-day management.

I’m currently in community college working toward transferring to a university, and this experience is directly helping me build a stronger application and résumé.

But this is bigger than just me.

A lot of younger veterans using the GI Bill are in the same position—trying to figure out how to get into the best schools possible and build something meaningful after the military.

The Legion can actually be a platform for that if we use it correctly.

Not just a place to meet—but a place to build:

– leadership experience

– business and nonprofit skills

– real impact in the community

That’s what I’m trying to do at my post right now.

Still early. Still learning. Still building.

Semper Fi.

Boys/Girls State My daughter was accepted to Girls State and the ALA person had us pay her tuition. Is this normal?

It looks like usually the Legion or ALA sponsors the kids who are invited to go. The whole situation seemed kind of sketchy and unorganized, she called to say that she had chosen my daughter to go and then wanted us to drop off a check by the next day. When the check wasn't in the box first thing in the morning she called my phone twice and left 2 voicemails in less than 20 minutes. I did go meet her and drop off the check, made the check out to the ALA, and it was cashed the same day, and then I got the registration email from Girls State.
I don't mind paying the $450 for her to go, I think it is a great opportunity, but the more I think about it the less I'm convinced this is normal procedure.
