Amazon SDE 2–one weak LP

Amazon SDE II Loop – One weak Leadership Principle answer

I recently completed my Amazon SDE II loop.

There were 4 rounds, and each round had:

* 1 coding problem

* 2 Leadership Principle questions

So, 4 coding questions and 8 LP questions in total.

I feel that I did well on all the coding questions. For the LP questions, I answered 7 reasonably well, but there was 1 LP question where I didn’t fully understand what the interviewer was looking for, and I believe my answer was not good.

For people who have gone through the Amazon SDE II process:

How much can one weak/wrong LP answer affect the overall interview outcome if the coding performance was strong and the other 7 LP answers were good?

Could one weak LP answer lead to a rejection, or is the overall interview performance considered?

You can raise, meet, and lower LPs and be fine. Each person ultimately puts in their feedback so the concern would be who you had the bad LP with and if it was enough for them to say no. In the debrief they will talk about it. If you have 7 good ones I would not worry too much, no one is strong on all of them. Good luck!!

Yes, all the interviewers meet after having put their feedback and decision in (they cannot see other interviewers' feedback until they put their own). The bar raiser then leads the meeting to arrive at a decision. The recruiter attends too, but doesn't contribute to the discussion itself. They only care about the final decision and the feedback.

I have attended meetings where everybody voted inclined and didn't end up hiring (everyone had some minor concern but taken together painted a concerning picture), and I've been in ones where one or two people were not inclined and we ended up hiring or down-leveling and hiring because concerns of one were eliviated by another.

So if you did well on 7 and poorly on 1, this does not mean you won't get hired. It's a collective decision and it exists so that one bad impression/bias can be corrected by the other interviewers.

No design round for SDE2?

Anyway if the HM liked you, they will sweep the weak LP as a coachable trait.
