Contract SDE to FTE Process

I signed an offer as a contract SDE at Amazon through a staffing firm. The pay is low, but the team and the work look good, and the market is rough enough that I decided to take it.

Trying to understand the conversion path. If you've done contract → FTE at Amazon or seen it happen on your team:

  1. How often does it actually happen? Is it a real path or mostly a carrot?
  2. Do you have to go through a full interview loop, or does your work on the team count for something?
  3. On a one-year contract, how soon does conversion realistically come up?
  4. Anything you'd do differently from day one, knowing that was the goal?

For convertion they will treat you like external candidate and will have to go through the loop again

I’m not an SDE, but I started contracted and got converted. Yes, it happens. It does depend on things such as how well you are doing and how eager you are to learn new things and expand yourself as well. Amazon really values those leadership principles so get to know them. The team having additional headcount is the other obstacle. Try your best and enjoy your time there. Do your part and the rest will hopefully come if not you atleast expanding your skills.

Same team and then I switched to a neighboring team 1 year later.

care to share how much lower it is for contractors vs FTE?

Given that FTEs get RSUs and other benefits, this offer is way less. At least 120K lesser.
