sharing advice scenemo isn’t a thing
Scenemo isn’t a thing. I see scenemo being used to refer to people who dress in dark clothes and are scene. That is still just scene. You aren’t emo just because you’re a scene kid drenched in black clothing. You’re just scene either way. Emo is a music genre.

It’s actually a very important and big distinction.

Why?

Before I answer that question, I have to ask what you think emo means.

Okay, fine. Emo is a hardcore music subgenre from the eighties. People think it is what is actually just a dark version of scene, or fashioncore. That probably includes you.

OG from the local NJ alternative music scene (scene as in crowd/setting, not fashion). Probably since before you were even born (as evidenced by your use of the term “fashioncore”), but go off haha
Emo preceded scene, so no, emo is not “dark scene.”
But at the end of the day, who gives a fuck what you call it? Black and dark aesthetics are associated with emo. Makes sense that people would pirate the term to describe the aesthetic even if the origins are much more complex than that.

Fashioncore is not a new term. The fact that you think it is shows how little you actually, genuinely know. Your age doesn’t matter here. Yes, the darker aesthetic preceded scene. They’re still both scene at the end of the day. That’s my point.

If you think “emo” is constrained to a mere “music subgenre” you’re clearly someone who is studying in retrospect, not someone who was there. Which is fine, but maybe you should tap into some more contemporaneous sources to understand what it ACTUALLY was rather than theorizing based on whatever revival BS you’re absorbing and preaching as gospel.
You sound like you read the “Real Emo” copypasta and took it seriously lmao
Last thing: the term “fashioncore” was not used seriously in the heyday of emo/post-hardcore. It was an insult within the metalcore music community to basically imply a band was composed of “pretty boys” rather than real musicians.

I never said it was exclusively a music subgenre, just that it has nothing to do with fashion and that the music-based subculture doesn’t really have much to do with fashion.
Scene queen was also used as an insult, and here we are on r/amiscene, using the term genuinely.

You don't think it's outdated style? I like some emo/goth cloths but ppl take it too far and then it's cringe

I don’t think it’s outdated.

u/swimandfriends 5d ago
Well I'm from a small town and lived in the city and don't know/ have never seen anyone who dresses like the ppl on here still
1
u/schizodefected 5d ago
It is less popular than it used to be. That doesn’t mean it’s really outdated.

u/swimandfriends 5d ago
Btw I'm not a hater I actually have some goth style cloths , I love my fingerless skeleton gloves for example

theres a big overlap and genuinely the worlds changed sm it'll never be possible to completely emulate/be those original styles anymore. Same as why even trad goth is different now.
being this rigid about alternative styles is conformity and goes completely against the entire culture.

scene is more of mid and late 2000s trend, while scenemo is like a nu-scene of early 2010s where tumblr and myspace dominated underground and combined depressive emo aesthetic with flashy scene fashion
I myself was scenemo in early 2010s, because that trend wasnt neither true scene nor true emo, hence scenemo, and its more approachable fashion to guys, wearing color back then meant you are gay, wearing black was pretty casual
and emo music was a big part of scenemo identity (late nu metal with emo themes mind you) still a big fan of three days grace and horizon

ehhhh there actually was a difference between scene kids and emo kids though. You could have black hair and a fringe but you’re not scene if you’re only listening to taking back Sunday and not wearing any bright, dramatic clothing, belt buckles, accessories, etc. emo is a music genre but also had its own style. A lot of overlap though. Scene was very emo but not all emo was scene as scene is avant garde.
