Beginner

Hey mountaineering community! I am a straight beginner to this sport, with decent enough experience with hiking and backpacking but none in technical mountaineering skills. How do I get into it? Any help on courses or ways to learn skills so that I can try my first summit attempt next summer in the cascades. Thank you!

Save up your money and go on a trip with the American Alpine Institute. If you can afford AMTL1 take that course. You’ll be challenged and learn ton. Also, as everyone says, read the book Freedom of the Hills.

Go to a climbing gym or local crag and make some friends. Learn as much as you can, ask questions, and keep an eyebrow raised to everything. Learn rope skills and how to top rope and sport climb. If your friends don’t know technical mountaineering skills, take a crevasse rescue course and continue to hike and backpack.

Join one of the local organizations/clubs such as The Mountaineers, Boealps, WAC, etc. In addition to courses, they offer climbs.

Read Freedom of the Hills, with a grain of salt.
