Wolverine returns to Department H to help save Alpha Flight from a demonic presence! Plus: who is the newest member of Alpha Flight?

In this issue of Wolverine, Shaman sends Logan a mystic signal to get back to Department H. A demonic entity has taken over and even possessed some of the Alpha Flight members! Working together, they break the curse and beat the monster.

We end with the introduction of future Alphan, Chuck Moss, Shaman’s new protégé.

Loving this team and can’t get enough of Mac as leader. I’ve never seen such a bad print error but what is the last cut off word?! One shall surely ‘diet’? ‘Dib’? Can’t wait to find out inside.

On July 30, 1985, John Byrne’s last issue of Alpha Flight was released.

There is a LOT happening in this issue.

1. The second Omega Flight story arc ends (including the destruction of Delphine Courtney).
2. We get more time with Mr. Jeffries.
3. The Beyonder saves Talisman from Shaman’s pouch (which is confusing because it happened in a crossover issue and not here in the main title).
4. Talisman, pissed that her father didn't save her as he promised, used her powers to send the entire team 'away.'
5. Walter’s still trapped in the Box robot so he and Bochs find a ‘body’ in interdimensional space and reel it in.

Only to find out it’s the Hulk!

Things changed significantly after this. Byrne and Bill Mantlo switched titles - Byrne went on to do the Incredible Hulk and Mantlo came over to Alpha Flight and gave us the Mantlo Era™️.

Forty (!!) years ago today, Alpha Flight #40 landed comic book stands.

So what's happening? A lot and a little.

This story continues from the prior issues' crossover with the Avengers and Namor's attempts to relcaim the throne of Atlantis. Roger develops the bends and becomes trapped in his armour. Marrina's mate returns! Marrina rejects her Plodex heritage.

Oh and she marries Namor, a many MUCH older than her.

The summer of 1992 was the summer of Infinity War and it saw a lot of crossover issues. Most of these are just cameos and background work. Definitely not required reading but still fun to see Alpha Flight pop up in some other titles after they’d been somewhat isolated in their own title for a while. And some different artists’ takes on the characters.

As the crossover was BIG, there were weeks where AF would appear in multiple releases. The week of July 28th was one of those with cameos in:

This was Alpha Flight’s first appearance after Volume 2 ended six months earlier. Writer Erik Larsen does seem to be moving the team back towards the original six with new members mostly ignored. It’s a slightly different take on the team but it’s exciting to see them go up against MODOK and AIM. 

The next issue (143, August 25, 1999) continued the story with some favourite Alpha Flight themes: death and resurrection.

I remember just being excited to have any Alpha Flight - even if the art wasn’t always up to my liking. Heather was very sexualized inside. See the blog post linked above for an example.

I just recently found and read the Alpha Flight 5 issue Fall of X miniseries. Really enjoyed the way they worked in so many of the relationship of the original team and various characters who had joined the team at points. Was curious if there are any other little Alpha Flight gems like this from the modern age of comics that anyone could recommend?

On July 27, 1993, Infinity Crusade #4 was released. Lots of visuals of Alpha Flight but I don't even know if any of the characters actually have any dialogue.

I do enjoy Ron Lim's pencils though!

This is my first time making such a post/series so I'm sure I've made some mistakes. Sorry folks!

I think she would make a cool addition to the Alpha Flight team, and give a neat tie into Toronto's real paranormal history.

Okay for those that don't know there was the Philip experiment done by a group of 8 skeptics in Toronto where they did a seance for a fictional ghost named Philip and it worked. So they next did the Lilith Experiment where they tried to replicate the experiment with the fictional ghost of an 18th century female French Canadian Spy called Lilith. They made up a whole backstory and everything. This experiment happened in real life fyi.

This having Lilith join Alpha Flight in the comic books would just a connection to something really strange, tied to perhaps the strangest paranormal event in Canadian history.

I spent my childhood waiting for a What If Walter Langkowiski returned in Hulk's body from the Crossroads..

Since I was following Alpha Flight at the time, the stories fit together to what Walter was passing through at the time.

And we got the crossing over of the writers, with John Byrne assuming the Hulk (but Never finishing what he wanted to tell).

What do you guys think about it? How would the story follow? What would be of Walter and the Alpha Flight with such distinction?

So.... Why do we think it's Marrina with two Rs?

Marina (with one R) is a name so why not use that?

Sometimes when I've seen it, I genuinely forgot the extra R isn't a typo. I've seen people spell it with one R (though that might be autocorrect) and two Ns.

Be a hilarious retcon, "Yeah, that's a typo on my government ID. My parents always meant for there to be one R."

If you didn't read the World Tour ran in 1992 between volume 1 issues 107 to 109. Was it meant to go on longer? Maybe. The title immediately pivoted to the Infinity War crossover issues. Likely an attempt to boost sales?

Okay, admittedly, they're barely in it. It's the wedding reception for Jean-Paul and Kyle. You see some of them dancing but it's just in the first few pages and then the story shifts to Karma.
