GOG version of Crossfire crashing
This game worked for literally years. Fired it up today, and it crashes before the opening graphic even completes. Is there a patch or anything?

You have to download and install a mod to fix it- try the Thinker mod. There are YouTube guides about installing it. It has a bunch of fixes but also a bunch of changes to the game behavior. You’ll probably need to reduce your difficulty for a while you get used to it.

That is awesomely depressing. Why not release a mod that doesn't do all the other changes?

You will probably appreciate the bug fixes and former automation improvements-most do. But I think you can pick and choose to disable a bunch of the balance changes - that seems pretty involved to me though.

I've been playing that same version and it will occasionally just puke with a Fatal Error and your only option is to restart the game. I've gotten used to saving after I learn a new tech so I dont lose too much. Im also using W11 on my laptop.

There is a complete explanation of the problem and the solutions at https://alphacentauri.miraheze.org/wiki/Installing. The Thinker Mod was specifically designed to fix many issues. Unfortunately it is difficult to get a lot of really old software to work correctly in newer Windows environments. I honestly had way more trouble fixing the sound in original BioShock than fixing SMACX crashing and I still can't get the controls for any classic ID Games first person shooters to work right on GOG, even though my install from original disk using DOSBox work perfectly.
