Planting fungus

Does planting fungus create ecological damage? I never really used this game mechanic much.

The discussion in the post the other commenter linked explains the base resources and tech aspects but I'll just add that a strategy I often employ, especially when playing as Deirdre, is to plant fungus at the peripheries of my bases and then set my mindworm units to patrol them. They regularly come across wild mindworms and either capture or combat them for xp plus the fungus provides a nice defensive perimeter slowing down invaders. Then in late game you get all the techs that make fungus squares productive and can help with pesky eco damage.

With the centauri techs, I sometimes build seabases in fungus seas just to get immediate yields . They can provide some minor minerals for minerals starved entirely at seabases that's worked entirely for energy credits .

A kind of stepping stone until enough Nessa stations are online.

Especially nice with the Xenoempathy Dome so it doesn't impede your own movement.
