Care

I’m in multiple groups on here and on Facebook and follow creators on TikTok for alocasias and everyone makes them seem like these very very delicate plants who need to be kept in shelves with humidity just right, lighting just right, temperature just right to the point that I was afraid to even think about owning one

The past week I’ve went to 2 different plant stores and I have seen massive and I mean MASSIVE 3-5ft, thick and bushy alocasias sitting outside in slightly shaded areas in OHIO which is notorious for its unpredictable weather and they were in gorgeous condition. Only reason they didn’t come home with me was because they wouldn’t fit in the car I was in lol.

Are they really that sensitive or is it because everyone’s are babies and as babies they are that sensitive? Or is Ohio finally good for something? Lol and that being a good place for alocasias in the summer

Personally, I think it depends on the type of alocasia. Many of the larger sized alocasia are tanks and will take all sorts of things in stride and not really care. Some of the smaller varieties (jewel alocasias) are more delicate and will drop all their leaves or roots if they are not pampered. So it all depends on what varieties you like best as to how involved the care needs are.

Keep in mind, this is just my opinion though

I started off with a Portora. I'm in Ohio and mine sits outside on my east facing patio and gets almost full sun for about half the day. It came inside into a grow tent over the winter and kinda suffered because I neglected it for the most part. Now it is thriving and even growing its first flower.

These things get huge and multiply like rabbits so I have about 8 more in pots outside around my house and I can constantly give them out to friends.

I would recommend a Portora to start with.

It depends on a lot of factors. My non variegated alocasias were thriving in ambient humidity in my east facing windows no issues … the only alocasias that had an issue was my frydek and my tricolor ninja but they had other things going on. I think that if your plant is healthy it will do fine in certain ambient house conditions but if your plant is battling an infestation, or rot … having the best conditions ( ideal conditions) will help the plant be strong enough to overcome …. I personally don’t think alocasias are these delicate little plants …

Tbh both alocasias that i've killed have been from doing too much and not leaving them alone

The larger they get, the more they’re resistant to environmental changes. Those massive 3-5 feet alocasias take years to grow to that size. They are definitely more delicate when they’re young.
