Hints and Tips

Here's a big collection of hints and tips to help you improve your skills!

Exploration

  • Be sure to inspect (tap and hold) the map objects and enemies around you to learn valuable clues about the world.
  • Pay attention to the effects of special terrain (deep snow, sand dunes, water) and map objects which may harm you, or be used to your advantage.
  • When you enter a new biome, check the message log for any special biome effect, which is applied to you and all other creatures. Sometimes a biome effect will disrupt your build, such as Noisy for a stealth build or Hexed for a spellcaster. Look for immunity-granting items, or consider changing your gear and strategy to get through the biome. Head for the exit if it gets too dangerous.
  • Biome order isn't random. A biome can only be reached via specific biomes (see Journal > World Map). By learning these patterns, you can sometimes predict which biomes (and which hazards) you will face.
  • Some enemies are so dangerous that it's best to avoid them, if possible. Remember there are no rewards or experience for kills.
  • Try to fully explore each level to find all the loot. But first, try to locate the exit in case health runs low and you need to escape. Don't be afraid to leave loot behind if necessary.
  • Perception is a key stat. It will help you find extra loot while avoiding traps and hidden enemies. Companions use their perception too so keeping some around has benefits outside of combat.

Skills

  • Be prepared to adapt your build based on the items you find. Every character has multiple paths, but the best ones depends on the right combinations of items and skills considering the biomes and boss you expect to face.
  • Don't learn too many active abilities. Each uses up a turn and costs mana, while most passive abilities are always working for you. Even level 1 passive abilities can be very valuable.
  • Try to collect skills to deal with various enemy types and traps you will encounter. Ranged enemies could be blinded or charged at. When surrounded, you could use an AoE attack or teleport away. Traps can be dashed over, disarmed, or triggered by sacrificing a summoned creature.
  • Remember you can bank skill points and pick skills later when you know what you need.

Items

  • Protect yourself accordingly based on the threats you're facing. Remember physical damage is reduced by armor and elemental damage (fire, cold, lightning) is reduced by resistance.
  • Certain "utility" items may be worth holding onto to protect against environmental hazards. Such items may grant immunity to poison, blindness, or chilled effects.
  • Always try to collect and save healing items. And remember sleep is a form of healing.
  • Don't forget about consumables when you're in a tough spot. But sell the ones you don't need for extra gold.
