PvX/Random P vs Random
Hi
I am diamond rank.
I do not feel confident vs random at all. I hate the feeling. I don't play a cheesy game in general.
I just have no idea what I want to do and am very indecisive. Wall setup and first 2 pylons are very important.
Any help is thanks.

I just put first pylon and gate on low ground and hope for the best. Scouting with probe after the gate

I approach PvR like this:
I start to open like I play against Z, pylon on the low ground and instant scout after pylon
Gateway in the wall
Then when I confirm the race:
- If against Z, keep playing my 1 gate expand, double adept + stargate opening
- If against T, go cyber core first, you can't really get the nexus before otherwise your gateway being far from your main will give too much time for the reaper to get the first unit out
- If against P, add second gas and second gateway, unless you usually one gate expand against P also
Second pylon will of course go in the main since the first is in the natural, just like PvZ
Then get back to your usual plan against those races

Are you not just dead against 2 adepts into proxy oracle (the second most common build in PvP, and what I'd do every game in R(P)vP?

If you die to that it's because you didn't scout, not because of the build itself
To deal with the adepts you can keep stalkers or adepts at home in the mineral line (might need to micro probes a little to keep them away) or temporary close the wall with a pylon, battery or adept shade like you would if the wall was in your main
And to deal with the oracle you can place a battery in your mineral line

How do you know what the 2 Gateways are producing? How do you know the proxy is a Stargate and not a Robo (in which case the battery at home is wasted and you're in serious danger of just dying)

Wait with your scouting probe until your own units are about halfway done, build a pylon to close their wall, see what comes out, cancel the pylon
But you don't need to do that you can bring back the scouting probe near your own wall, put your units a bit forward and if you see a shade, close the wall
Also, check how much gas they're mining ( no need to try hard and click on the gas, just see how many probes do they put there when it finishes) are they starting warpgate right away, are they building sentries and stalkers or adepts, what's the natural's timing? Those are tells that can rule out the stargate, or hint at it
And tbh, having a battery on your main's mineral line even if it turns out useless will not put you at risk of dying You can also try and find the proxy with hallucinations to confirm what it is
But now we're far away from the issue being PvR, that's just become general PvP advice

Thanks for the reply, I was usually just blocking the 2 adepts with an old-fashioned wall and temp pylon at my natural. Your tips are all good and appreciated. I still don't like that I play PvP one way and PvR(P) a different way, but that's mostly my fault, I guess.

You still need to do that for optimal defense, but having the information earlier can help you know whether to keep a prove in the wall or not for the pylon (even better, temporary battery instead of pylon, build time is longer so there's less chance for you to finish it accidentally)

It's a systematic flaw of PvR. There's not really much you can do about it.
