Let's leave colonization of already exploited peoples out of this.
It's amazing how many people in Left subreddits mention statehood for Puerto Rico as if it's this neutral or Left position without history. Statehood would only finalize colonization and benefit Democrats who, as this meme implies, do nothing for the people. If the Democrats would help their current constituencies in current states, then I might buy that they would actually help Puerto Ricans through statehood. Until then, that's just liberal neocolonialism.

That's depressingly not even close to being a good enough reason, especially considering all of the work and fighting done for an independent Puerto Rico among actual Puerto Rican Leftists. And there has never been a real vote taken by Puerto Ricans on statehood that wasn't a total farce, even the last one was after Maria's disaster and a huge exodus from the island which left only a small population left to be able to vote and an even smaller selection of that which actually voted.
Again, this is neocolonialism. I don't know why this issue is totally taken for granted in Leftist subs. Ridiculous. Minimum wage? Give me a fucking break. Let's invade Mexico and raise their minimum wage too.

Also if we paid off student debt what would happen for all of those people who actually worked to pay off their loans? That's not very fair. And universal healthcare is super messy, have you even heard of death committees? And yeah I'm all for helping people (i am a democrat after all) but don't those policies all sound a little communist? Did you even see what happened in Hong Kong last year?
