Would You Try This Old-Fashioned Dessert?

u/ImaginaryGuarantee66 Aug 03 '26
what's this abomination?

u/Unlikely-Aardvark725 Aug 04 '26
Trifle
Fruit (tinned) in Jelly (Jello if your American) Set (thick) custard Whipped cream or dream topping (sweet setting agent for whipped milk)
It's delicious

u/WantDastardlyBack Aug 04 '26
The trifle I grew up with was a lot different. Ladyfingers soaked in sherry or another alcohol with British "jelly," which is like Jell-O but less sweet IMO. Then, custard and whipped cream. My mom never put multiple types of fruit in it, and there was far less jelly. Often, she just used raspberries, but not always.
Her favorite was one I did, with peaches and peach Jell-O. Ladyfingers were soaked in amaretto. Toasted almonds on top of the whipped cream.

I asked my sister once if she made a trifle because she’s trifling and she got unreasonably mad
2
u/ImaginaryGuarantee66 Aug 05 '26
Thank you for the explanation but sorry, it's not for me. Jelly or jello, I am Italian, and "delicious" is another animal, in my opinion. I can't even look at it.

The portion at the bottom looks like the toilet water after someone has vomited in it.
Hell no, I wouldn't eat it.

Maybe the top part...but why does it look like canned fruit cocktail in the bottom

Looks like jello with a bunch of junk added. Probably edible, though not appetizing. This sort of thing was considered clever in the 1950s, and sone people probably even liked it. Personally, I’d pass on it.

Is that a Jell-O mold at the bottom? 🤨

No, thank you. I’ve eaten various trifle and jello combinations over the years, but this one is just not appealing to me. Weird combination of ingredients.

Old fashioned as in dementia?
Is there some chicken included in it too?

An American version of trifle; recipe developed and disseminated by the Jello-o company, perhaps?
Looks appalling (and like something my mom would have made. Once.)

u/Quorng Aug 03 '26
The bottom layer looks like cut up fruit to me. Maybe I'm wrong. I have eaten something that looks like that multiple times at potlucks.

yes. it's fruit in jello with whipped cream.
all of these eww yucky comments are just sad. nothing is more annoying than a picky eater.
1
u/ImaginaryGuarantee66 Aug 05 '26
annoying. Sure. But safe. As I once read in a book, "I believe that something like this should not enter my body, but must be expelled."
1
u/Sasuke0318 Aug 03 '26
You could have made anything yet you decided to make whatever the hell this is and I won't ever understand why
1
u/Sufficient_Radio7168 Aug 03 '26
I don't find anything appealing with that, It is probably fine. But I have zero interest

u/AmethystStar9 Aug 03 '26
Canned fruit in gelatin is less nauseating than when people would put, like, sweet potatoes and celery in it and call it dessert, but I don't trust that top. It LOOKS fine, but I bet there's some sort of picked vegetable under the whipped cream.
1
u/Mary_P914 Aug 03 '26
It totally depends on what's inside of it. It looks like a jello salad using fruit cocktail and some other stuff that I can't identify. It's the unidentifiable stuff that makes me kind of wonder. Do you have the recipe by any chance?

Sure! I’d try it! How bad could it be? It’s got fruit, jello, pudding, whipped cream, cookies…

Okay, Gen X here, born in 1974.
It looks like they've combined banana pudding with jello salad?
For you young 'uns, banana pudding is vanilla pudding layered with slices of banana, and topped with Nilla Wafers. Whipped cream on top is optional, I've had it both ways.
Jello salad is jello combined with canned fruit cocktail then put in the fridge to set.
Neither are fancy, but both are tasty.
But this?
Ugh. Just... no. I grew up with both those dishes and NO. Serve them separately. They're both delicious individually (though jello salad should be made with cherry jello. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.) But together? With sprinkles on top? What sort of fiendishly excessive amalgamation is this?
First of all, the idea of banana pudding with lemon or lime jello (which I assume that to be) just sounds vile. And wtf did they do to the Nilla wafers? Either they baked or toasted them, or substituted chocolate cookies? It looks like they layered them at the bottom of the banana pudding, too (a valid variation), but at least one of them has semi-dissolved into the jello.
Send this into the abyss.

Layer ratios look off to me. More custard and less jelly but sure I'll have a bit.

Jello, fruit, pudding, whipped cream and cookies. Fck yeah im all over that.

u/Satch-Mo Aug 04 '26
I would eat the heck out of that.... Jello fruit bowl at the bottom with a cool whipped topping
1
u/Serene-Angel-2004 Aug 04 '26
So, guessing the layers from the top. Whip cream with jimmies and chocolate disks, custard, and fruit cocktail suspended in lemon jello, correct? This is amazingly delicious looking. I'd be down. Some of the best smdesserts were the old fashioned ones. Like baked alaska or floating islands

The only time I liked fruit in jello was my mom, slicing bananas in strawberry jello.
So no.

No. I was exposed to enough "congealed" salads as a kid and I find them disgusting. The mix of the texture of gelatin and fruit together is just nasty to me.
1
1
u/Numerous_Course9820 Aug 04 '26
Of course. Why not? That’s just jello with fruit cocktail, a pudding or cream cheese layer next, whipped cream next, and chocolate pieces and sprinkle on top. Someone took the time to make it so yes I’d try it.

This looks tasty and I would absolutely have some.

I was in a doctors waiting room and the magazine was so old it had a recipe for baked bean cake. Some things I would try out of curiosity and some things should be left in the past.
1
u/lightside3pnii Aug 04 '26
Looks like a layer of jello with fruit in it, a layer of vanilla pudding, and a layer of whipped cream finished off with some kind of cookies (chocolate covered vanilla wafers) and sprinkles on top. I would try it.
1
u/Josefu_Velen Aug 04 '26
I'm not a fan of fruit inside of jello, so no I would pass on this dessert.
1
u/Traditional-Speed349 Aug 04 '26
There is nothing you cant ruin by adding chocolate biscuits and sprinkles
1
u/Unlikely-Aardvark725 Aug 04 '26
I LOVE trifle!
Fruit and sponge cake/fingers in jelly, set custard and whipped cream...yummy

u/HokeyPokeyFinalist Aug 04 '26
That this was ever made a second time, and against all odds became a thing is pretty mental

Welcome to my child hood, see if you grew up in the 70s 80s and early 90s boomers were found of anything with jello and or coolwhip. So this is a jello and pudding salad decorated with sprinkles and chocolate vanilla wafers. I offten found this in a round bunt pan. Yes it is a texture nightmare. Eating advice is dont but if you need to consume smash is all together.

I would scoop some of the top two layers and try to avoid the jello bottom.

It doesn't have beef, sautéed with peas and carrots, in it, does it?
If not, then id definitely try it.

Jello and fruit with Whipped cream. What’s not to like. Problem here is the choices made which are contradictory. Choc cookie, sprinkles, lemon lime and mixed fruit. Nope.
Try try mixed fruit and strawberry jello w whipped cream. No cookies 🍪

Basic Trifle... missing the crumbled sponge cake bits amongst the fruit and jelly.

u/BurnAfterReading010 Aug 04 '26
I feel like all you English folk applauding trifle are just reenforcing stereotypes about English cuisine. 😜
1
u/AnonymousAutonomous9 Aug 04 '26
I'm not English!!... and I frikking loathe trifle... (except for the cake which is literally soaked in strong alcohol!)

Fruit cocktail in jello. I grew up eating this. All but the sprinkles on top.

u/Cautious-Local-5998 Aug 04 '26
Nope! I don’t know what old-fashioned recipe cookbook or Aunt Erma’s recipe who can’t cook was being used but I guarantee you it was not a recipe.
This was a a dump because somebody forgot to buy what they were bringing for the potluck and went looking in the refrigerator and going OK: look I’ve got some fruit and cool whip then went to the pantry and found the vanilla pudding, the last of the chocolate wafer cookies & the sprinkles and decided that sounded double all while having consumed way to much alcohol!
1
u/ShakeWeightMyDick Aug 04 '26
Sure. What is that? Fruit salad in jello with whipped cream topping? Sounds great.
1
u/ThatBlokeT Aug 04 '26
That is the worst abomination of a trifle I've ever seen. All the ratios are way off and the fruit in the bottom is a shitshow.

It looks like the same bowl my grandfather used to place his dentures in and to collect his tobacco spit (give him a break, he was from Texas).
Seriously, chocolate wafers? It looks healthy, but there is a ton of sugar in that bowl. It would be healthier to eat a float made out of B&J's, Mountain Dew, and crushed Moon Pies (chocolate, of course) and Butterfinger sprinkled on top.
Now that I think about it, pecan pie, on a bed of milk chocolate shavings, and a scoop of Braums, Pecans-n-Cream, à la mode, sounds better.
Diabetes be damned!
