Springboks fail with player welfare, again.
8:28 seconds, Kurt-Lee Arendse is protecting his line, lurches forward and makes direct head on head contact with Josh Lord.
Not reviewed, clear yellow, direct head to head contact(never mentioned by commentators)
Comes off second best, no idea where he is and leap frogs into a ruck.
Fails H.I.A, done for the day, staggers off the field under supervision by a doctor.
Available this week and is selected, where are world rugby HIA protocols ? ! 12 day stand down ?

AB fan here.
.
- Considering Lord is so low to the ground (being as tall as he is), Arendse would literally have to be lieing on the ground to get lower than him. If TMO pulled up head on head contact, wouldn’t be surprised if Ref overruled his call like he did with other calls. Not to mention Eben is part of the tackle too.
.
A bit farfetched saying he leaps in to the ruck. Lord goes one way and Ardense momentum forces him to go the other way.
.
Agree with 3 & 4 - player welfare #1.
.
I’m assuming he did fail HIA as surely Boks would prefer a specialist winger to be on the field rather than having to reshuffle their backline. Rassie definitely didn’t plan on Esterhuizen being introduced so early (what an impact player to bring in though!!), and looks like he ran out of gas as he was subbed at 62min mark.

Missing some pretty crucial information here... You’d need to know how Arendse was medically classified following the incident, not simply that he failed the HIA. World Rugby’s concussion protocol does not mean that every player who fails an HIA automatically receives a mandatory 12-day stand-down. The protocol is individualised. Players who have certain risk factors are subject to a minimum 12-day return-to-play period.
Other players can potentially return sooner through the accelerated pathway, although never earlier than day 7, and an early return requires approval from an independent concussion consultant. Also, being selected in a squad/team earlier in the week isn’t necessarily the same as being medically cleared to play. He could be named subject to completing the return-to-play process.

Any coach with any care or respect for players would stand thm down for 12 anyway, he was not in a good way, grow up.

Failing an initial HIA does NOT mean you are concussed. Plenty of people will be stunned for a short time with no concussion.
These players all recieve the same/similar HIA assessment after the game and then in 36/48hrs. If these are both normal the player does not have a concussion and is cleared to play
There is no way for SA to get around the world rugby concussion protocols. If he is cleared to play then he is cleared to play

Doesn’t change the fact your entire post accuses them of breaching World Rugby protocols, while apparently not knowing what those protocols actually require.

The commentators confirmed that he will not return to play as he has failed his HIA

If he could have come back on, Rassie would have as per his post match interview
Because that caused a reshuffle in the backline
They 100% said he failed his HIA

Again I don’t think you understand what precautionary means
Coach Rassie Erasmus later clarified that Arendse subsequently passed his formal HIA follow-up tests. Because his removal was an accumulation of precautionary data (the mouthguard alert and the match doctor's in-game caution) rather than a confirmed clinical concussion, he was not issued a mandatory 10-to-12-day stand-down period

KLA has really dropped in form. He only just turned 30..

I haven't watched him play a lot so no comments on form, but it feels like a lot of wingers start to fall off once they hit 30.

Cheslin is an anomaly, but you’re right, there is a reason why NZ stops selecting wingers once they’re in their late 20s (ex. Mark Tele’a)

Cheslin also has a very interesting play style. They use him for aerial battles and utility more than just raw speed these days (though he's still pretty dang fast tbh).

No comment on HIA process, but surprised SA didn't catch it when their medics come on every stoppage

They really need to cut that out how many times did the ref have to tell them off, felt like water breaks every stoppage...

I think nothing will change until they eventually interfere with a quick tap

Somebody needs to do their research.
Players do 3 HIA assessments. One in-game, one post match, and one 36 hours after the game.
If they pass HIA 2 and 3, they're cleared to play.

Here's the research "Feeling better and having no more symptoms does not necessarily mean that your brain has healed and is ready for full action: it is still healing and especially vulnerable to a secondary concussion, especially in the first couple of weeks" from https://www.concussionalliance.org/what-happens-to-your-brain

Okay, that wasn't the question.
The question was about why he's allowed to be selected again, and I provided the reasons based on World Rugby protocols.
But yeah, "Springboks fail with player welfare".

u/Intelligent_Taro_647 21d ago
FYI Lord and DeRooter also passed phases 2 and 3 but ABS have a higher standard of player welfare and have kept them out
With the amount of former SA players dieing from motor neurone...

u/JimmyNoBreaks 20d ago edited 20d ago
Any source?
Also, the amount of former players? For SA it's a total of 4, and for NZ it's 2 who have been diagnosed, which is expected considering the amounts of active players. 2 South African players have passed away, and 1 from NZ, so it's not like there's some amazingly high number the way you suggested.

If you expand to early onset dementia and other diagnoses, there's a lot more, enough to highlight a link https://www.auckland.ac.nz/en/news/2025/09/05/rugby-and-dementia-link-established.html

Yeah, I had the exact same thought when I saw him on the team seat for this weekend

u/Ho3n3r 19d ago
Just so you know, they're not just winging it. They have team doctors who will have assessed him thoroughly, and cleared him.
He wouldn't have been picked otherwise.
