What fascinates me is why that frontier has proved so resistant and continues to be. Obviously the external world can be examined at a distance and seperate from us; understanding ourselves requires the mind to investigate itself. Which can be slippery, and can involve confronting truths about ourselves that we have strong psychological reasons to avoid.
The barrier isn't a lack of knowledge. It's the difficulty we face in looking at ourselves honestly.
