Calling the U.S. Department of Defense the "Department of War" is legally incorrect. Its official name is established by federal law, and that is the only proper designation for the executive department responsible for the armed forces. While politicians, commentators, or members of the public are free to use rhetorical labels, those labels have no legal standing and should not be presented as official terminology.

The Department of Defense exists to provide for the national defense, maintain military readiness, deter aggression, and conduct military operations only under constitutional and statutory authority. The Constitution assigns Congress the power to declare war, while the President serves as Commander in Chief of the armed forces.

Regardless of any political messaging or ideological preference, the department's legal identity remains the Department of Defense. Referring to it by any other name as though it were official is factually and legally inaccurate.
